At Haleakalā National Park yesterday, the Director of Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and conservationists involved in Birds, Not Mosquitoes, shed light on the ongoing project to save native birds on East Maui. 

State Rep. Mahina Poepoe has introduced Bill 2544, which provides dependable non-emergency medical transportation for residents of medically underserved rural communities such as Molokai and Lāna‘i. The measure makes chartered flights to seat patients, as well as health care providers.

The Board of Land and Natural Resources on Friday approved plans by the DLNR, and US Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct a pilot release of captive-bred ʻalalā onto forest reserve lands in east Maui. 

The Department of Water Supply is requesting that residents, visitors and businesses of Nāhiku in East Maui conserve water. A water line repair has been delayed due to inclement weather.

The Flash Flood Warning is canceled for the island of Maui as of 2:38 p.m. The National Weather Service reports that the heavy rain has ended. Hāna Highway has been reopened, but portions of Piʻilani Highway remain closed. A Flood Watch remains in effect until 6 p.m. on Friday for all of the main Hawaiian Islands.

Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke Building Program received a grant award totaling $300,000 that will support the Native Hawaiian community through the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.  Program representatives say the grant will help to reinforce and strengthen Native Hawaiians ‘ohana (family), moʻomeheu (culture), and ʻāina (land and water) while also providing support to increase Economic Stability. The County of Maui’s roadway along rural Alelele Point in East Maui was reopened Tuesday, after the completion of infrastructure reinstallation that followed emergency slope scaling and rock debris removal.

A new eight-passenger bus to transport East Maui residents to their jobs, shopping in Central Maui and medical appointments was blessed at a ceremony Friday.

Road restoration, catchment fencing and reinstalling Hawaiian Telcom infrastructure will continue on the $1.5 million emergency slope stabilization project. Anticipated completion is July 19, 2023.

The Water Authority, Social Services and Parks Committee, chaired by Sinenci, recruited and vetted East Maui Regional Community Board applicants following approval of a charter amendment by 64% of the voters at the Nov. 8 election. The board members will appoint the director and approve a long-range watershed-management plan and other related programs.

County of Maui crews set up concrete barriers today to prevent traffic along a nearly 1-mile Hāna Highway road closure in Kīpahulu where unstable cliffs pose a safety hazard. The closure prevents motorists from traveling completely around the rural area that connects East Maui and South Maui.

Mayor Richard Bissen is bringing Holomua Kākou to Hāna as part of his ongoing effort to take county government to the diverse communities that make up Maui County.

East Maui’s hotspots include Nā‘ili‘ilihaele Stream (also known as Bamboo Forest), Waikamoi Falls, Kaihalulu (also known as Red Sand Beach), Wai‘oka (also known as Venus Pools), and Honolewa (also known as South Wailua Falls).

The Maui Council’s Budget, Finance and Economic Development Committee will receive testimony on the fiscal year 2024 budget on Thursday, April 6, at 6 p.m. at Hāna High and Elementary School Cafeteria.

The NPS will use an incompatible insect technique (IIT) which consists of repeatedly releasing incompatible male mosquitoes into the wild to reduce the reproductive potential of female mosquitoes in the project area. 

Hāna-based nonprofit Ma Ka Hana Ka ‘Ike received a $20,000 donation from Hawaiian Electric to support the construction of a new solar wood-drying kiln to expand its construction program for at-risk youth in East Maui. 

East Maui’s Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke Building Program is the recipient of a $220,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs that will support the Native Hawaiian community.

Support for East Maui families will arrive in plenty of time for Christmas thanks to a coalition of organizations behind the ‘Ohana Support Mobile Community Services.

As of noon on Tuesday, Oct. 4, Piʻilani Highway at Nuʻu Bay has reopened, the Department of Public Works reported.
