A 23-year-old Arizona woman was airlifted to safety after suffering a serious leg and foot injury from a fall at the trail leading to Kaihalulu “Red Sand” beach in Hāna, Maui.

Progress continued April through June on projects and goals of the Maui Destination Management Action Plan, which is a part of the Maui Nui plan.

In the summer of 2021, a BBC film crew journeyed into East Maui and The Nature Conservancy’s Waikamoi Preserve to film segments for a new series called the Green Planet, which will be screened virtually on July 26.

Hāna Arts has been awarded a $4,600 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to hold holiday events to unite East Maui ‘ohana. 

Maui police have closed the Piʻilani Highway in the Hāna area of East Maui due to flooding and landslides.  The Piʻilani Highway (Hwy 31) is closed at Mile 19 and Mile 36.  Motorists should use alternate routes.  The closure went into effect at 4:30 a.m. on Monday, May 2, 2022. 

Saying it took many years and “lots of aloha,” Kaupō community leaders highlighted the significance of their new community resource center on remote, historic Kaupō School grounds, which gained approvals Tuesday at Maui Planning Commission. 

Hāna Highway at Milepost 43 will be closed to traffic during various hours from Friday through Sunday, Jan. 14-16, 2022, to complete work on Mahalawa Bridge in East Maui.

Pavement reconstruction will result in the closure of portions of the Piʻilani Highway in East Maui on the next two Saturdays.

MEO Hāna assists the Maui Food Bank with the twice monthly deliveries in a partnership with Kaunoa Senior Services and ‘Ohana Makamae.

To assist with an increase in COVID-19 cases in Hāna, a donation drive for items to help Hāna residents with personal protective items and support families in quarantine will take place on Saturday, Aug. 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kahului Shopping Center in the parking lot near Burger King.

More enforcement is needed to deter illegal parking on the Hāna Highway, as rural residents deal with an influx of visitors and limited resources.

In a 46-page ruling, a First Circuit Court Judge ruled in favor of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, Maui County, Alexander and Baldwin, and East Maui Irrigation, in a case brought by the Sierra Club regarding water diversions from east Maui streams.

Portions of the Hāna Highway (Route 31) south of Hāna town will be closed overnight from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. beginning Sunday, Feb. 7, through Friday, Feb. 12, for on-site engineering studies.

A 41-year-old California man suffered multiple injuries to his body after falling approximately 20 feet from a waterfall onto rocks below in the area known as “Bamboo Forest” in the East Maui town of Kailua.

The Hāna Highway checkpoint will be terminated when the extended closure expires at the end of today, according to Maui Mayor Michael Victorino. According to the Mayor, the checkpoints at both Twin Falls and ʻUlupalakua Ranch will not have National Guard or Maui Police Department presence starting tomorrow.

Senate Majority Leader J. Kalani English (Hāna, East and Upcountry Maui, Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i and Kaho‘olawe) announced today that public restrooms along the Hāna Highway will remain closed until further notice while the highway is restricted to local traffic only.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation informs the traveling public that Hāna Highway (Route 360) between Kapakalua Road and Hāna Town is restricted to local traffic until further notice beginning March 18, 2020.

Rep. Lynn DeCoite issued an open letter on Monday evening to visitors, tourists and tour operators in the East Maui community of Hāna, and the outer islands of Moloka‘i and Lana‘i. The letter asks visitors and tours to do their part to help keep communities healthy amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

At 6:30 a.m., radar indicated very heavy rainfall over the Hāna coast, and along the slopes of windward Haleakalā. Rainfall rates of two inches per hour on saturated soils is leading to extreme runoff, with additional rainfall expected, according to the NWS forecast.
