Recipients selected for inaugural East Maui Water Authority community grants

The County of Maui East Maui Water Authority has selected five recipients for its inaugural community grant program, which supports local projects focused on water stewardship, cultural practices, environmental restoration and community collaboration in East Maui. Projects funded through the program include: the East Maui Farm, led by Nāpua Hūʻeu; Nā Moku ʻAupuni ‘O Ko‘olau Hui, led by Jessie-Ellen Kekiwi-Aweau; Friends of Twin Falls, represented by Maile Davis; Okada Design, led by Corinne Okada Takara; and Kahu ʻĀina: Earth Guardian Network, led by Liana Murillo.

Maui County, US Geological Survey collaborate on West Maui water project

The Maui County Council’s Water and Infrastructure Committee received a briefing Monday afternoon on a bill that would authorize the mayor to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the US Geological Survey for water resource exploration in West Maui.

Crews clear downed tree branches near Honomanū at Mile 14 of Hāna Highway

UPDATE: (8.18.25 6:43 a.m.): State transportation crews have cleared downed tree branches that were blocking the road at Honomanū near Mile 14 of the Hāna Highway. The incident resulted in the temporary closure of the road from around 4:37 a.m. The road was completely cleared at 6:43 a.m.

Former mayor, kalo farmers selected for new board to steward water in East Maui

East Maui Council member Sinenci said the passage of this charter amendment returns the stewardship of the East Maui watersheds toward local residents of East Maui, “residents who have often sacrificed their lives maintaining this system, and who had to idly watch as their life suffered from a lack of water.”
