Services honoring the life and legacy of Nālani Kanakaʻole, a revered hula master and cultural practitioner, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2026, in the storied place that bears her late mother’s name, Edith Kanakaʻole Stadium in Hilo.

Nālani Kanakaʻole, a fifth-generation loea hula whose life work preserved and perpetuated the ancient traditions of Hawaiian chant and hula kahiko, died peacefully on Jan. 3, 2026, in Hilo. She was 79.

Cody Pueo Pata will be the featured musician at this month’s free Hawaiian Music Series on Thursday Sept. 26 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Lahaina Civic Center Amphitheater. Pata is the Kumu Hula of Ka Malama Mahilani, a classically trained Haku Mele, and an entertainer and musician of Hawaiian music. He is also a Hawaiian language and culture educator.

As the phased reopening of West Maui officially begins Sunday, the County of Maui is distributing a series of videos for the Maui community and its visitors.

A condolent ceremonial resolution honoring the late Kumu Keli‘i Tau‘ā will be presented Friday, April 28, 2023 at 9 a.m. in the Council Chamber on the 8th floor of the County Building.

Kumu hula Keali‘i Reichel will highlight the efforts of Hālau Keʻalaokamaile to create a home and cultural center at Hōkūnui Maui, LLC in the Piʻiholo area of Upcountry Maui. He is the featured speaker at the Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce’s Talk Story event on Tuesday, July 10.

The Shops at Wailea welcomes kumu hula, Kealiʻi Reichel and 30 dancers from Hālau Keʻalaokamaile for their inaugural performance for Concerts at The Shops on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016 at 5:30 p.m.

Kumu hula of Halau Hula ‘O Hokulani, Marlene Hokulani DeRego passed away on July 1, after a six-month battle with stage-four cancer. She was 57-years-old.
