Fourteen people were displaced after an early morning fire on Hopoe St. in Lahaina. The fire was reported at 4:05 a.m. on Friday, March 22.

Update/power restored: 1,382 without power in parts of Kula

Hawaiian Electric reports that power has been restored to all customers in Kula as of 6:40 p.m. The outage was due to a large tree on power lines.

Maui Island unemployment at 5.8%, Maui County at 5.6% in February 2024

The non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Maui Island was 5.8% in February 2024, compared to 6.2% the previous month, and 2.9% at the same time in 2023. The data was included in a new report released today from the Hawaiʻi Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

Haʻikū filmmaker Ryan Luskin’s film “The Sailing Movie” is scheduled for public release this fall. “The Sailing Movie” is the tale of Luskin’s son Saelyn and his right of passage, as he sails with his parents through 16 countries in search of “six essential life skills to thrive on a quickly changing planet.” While the bulk of the project was shot in 2013 in the Caribbean, crucial segments were filmed more recently on Maui.
