Maui Mayor Michael Victorino continued to offer encouragement to those who have been unable to get through to the state’s antiquated system for unemployment assistance. There are an estimated 37,000 individuals who have filed for Unemployment in Maui County. 

In Maui County, the Abbott test was conducted on a hospitalized patient, who tested negative and was subsequently transferred into hospice care. The equipment helped to confirm that the patient could be transferred safely to another healthcare facility.

As of noon on Friday, May 1, 2020, there are 619 cases of COVID-19 identified in Hawaiʻi with 1 new case on Oʻahu. To date, 532 people have recovered. Of the 116 cases in Maui County, at least 84 have been released from isolation and 16 have required hospitalization. Of the state’s 16 deaths, five were in Maui County.

A father and his teen daughter were rescued in waters off of the Keālia Boardwalk on Wednesday when the girl’s kayak capsized and strong winds pushed her offshore.

A newlywed California couple who arrived in Hawaii for their honeymoon, were arrested by special agents from the Department of the Attorney General on Thursday for allegedly violating the state’s 14-day quarantine. 

The University of Hawaiʻi Maui College joined the Rotary Clubs of Kahului-Maui and Lahaina Sunset in cooperation with Sysco, in delivering more than 8,800 pounds of fresh produce, refrigerated and frozen items to the Maui Food Bank for needy families.

The state Department of Transportation has issued an update relating to driver’s licenses, safety checks and vehicle registrations amid the current stay at home orders.

Four food drives held across the island collected more than 1,350 pounds of food and $1,318 in donations.  The food drives were organized by a hui of Maui conservation nonprofit organizations and business who joined forces as part of Volunteer Week to assist those in need during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Waiehu Golf Course reopens on Friday, May 1, 2020, but with health and safety precautions due to COVID-19.

The donation will support additional shipments this week and in May to supplement Maui Food Bank’s regular monthly delivery of food to Moloka‘i. More than 33,000 pounds of food will be distributed by the Maui Food Bank to Moloka‘i residents in need through a $20,000 contribution from the Hawaiian Electric Industries Charitable Foundation.

As of noon on Thursday, April 30, 2020, there are 618 cases of COVID-19 identified in Hawaiʻi with 3 new cases on Hawaiʻi Island, one new case on Maui, and one additional case in a Hawaiʻi resident who was diagnosed outside of Hawaiʻi. Maui County’s count increased by one to 116 confirmed positive. At least 84 Maui cases have been released from isolation, and 14 have required hospitalization.

Public high schools across Maui today announced the dates, times and formats of their respective alternative graduation ceremonies.

Speeding citations on Maui are up 92% since the start of Maui’s stay-at-home order was implemented on March 20, 2020.  The data covers a five-and-a-half week period through April 29, 2020.

In March, visitor spending dropped 49.7 percent to $221.6 million. Total visitor days decreased (-51.1%), but average daily spending was up (+2.9% to $209 per person) compared to a year ago. Visitor arrivals declined 54.5 percent to 125,943. Maui’s stay-at-home order went into effect on March 20, while the state’s mandatory stay-at-home order took effect nearly a week later on March 26, followed by a statewide mandatory traveler quarantine on March 28.

Tiki Tiki Thai Cuisine is providing free meals to everyone in first responder and active Military roles on Sunday, May 3, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Drive-through COVID-19 testing takes place Thursday, April 30, at Keōpūolani Park in Kahului. Testing will be open to hospital and healthcare workers, first responders and public transportation workers ONLY from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Testing for the general public will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Testing will be provided at no-cost by Premier Medical Group.

The Maui Police Department is requesting the public’s help in locating Anthony Salsedo, 18, of Makawao. Police say Salsedo was last seen, leaving his residence on April 22, 2020.
