Maui Huliau’s youth film festival returns to Imua Discovery Garden, May 28

Maui Huliau Foundation, an environmental education nonprofit serving Maui’s youth, will host their annual Huliau Youth Environmental Film Festival at the Imua Discovery Garden in Wailuku on Sunday, May 28 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This outdoor showing will feature nine short environmental films created by Maui students from various schools over the past school year.

Wasps could limit coffee berry borer impacts in Hawaiʻi

Voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa arrived in Yakutat, the first stop on the Alaska Heritage Sail. It is the northernmost Southeast Alaska community, and the furthest north the canoe has ever voyaged.  The Alaska Heritage Sail is a pre-voyage through the Southeast region of Alaska before the Global Launch of the Moananuiākea Voyage circumnavigation of the Pacific on June 15, 2023. 

Hawaiian Airlines launches nonstop weekly flights between Hawaii and the Cook Islands

Hawaiian Airlines this afternoon gathered its guests to commemorate the inauguration of nonstop weekly flights between Honolulu and Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Hawaiian previously operated the HNL-RAR route from 1987 to 1993.

11 new public Pre-K classrooms underway, including two on Maui

Eleven new public preschool classrooms are slated to open across the state this August thanks to Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke and the Ready Keiki Initiative. The first 11 classrooms are expected to open this fall for the 2023-2024 school year, enrolling 20 students in each classroom at no cost to parents.

Driver in hit-and-run crash in Waikapū, Maui arrested on suspicion of negligent injury

A Lahaina man was arrested Tuesday morning, following a hit-and-run crash in which he allegedly struck a moped with his sedan and fled the scene. Police say that as a result of the collision, the moped operator, a 32-year-old Wailuku woman became caught in the undercarriage of the sedan and was dragged for a significant distance before becoming dislodged.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture says a resident saw children playing with a snake at about 3 p.m. yesterday. The 3.5 foot female gopher snake was captured and euthanized.

Barriers, electric signs warn motorists of East Maui road closure following rockfall

County of Maui crews set up concrete barriers today to prevent traffic along a nearly 1-mile Hāna Highway road closure in Kīpahulu where unstable cliffs pose a safety hazard. The closure prevents motorists from traveling completely around the rural area that connects East Maui and South Maui.

Maui’s local film industry making a mark with Moku Moku production in Makawao

Locally produced comedy series, Moku Moku began filming its first season on Tuesday in Makawao after a pilot test launch earlier this year. The show is now producing episodes 2-6 following a blessing at the production basecamp Upcountry.
