Public can protect sea turtles by reporting their nesting activities

Sea turtles nest on Hawaiʻi beaches from mid-April through September, however, nesting can extend into December. People can ensure that they successfully lay their eggs by keeping a respectful distance of at least 10 feet from sea turtles and their nests. And then report any nesting activity to the NOAA Fisheries Marine Wildlife Hotline at 1-888-256-9840.

Maui median home price is $1.2M, up 1.9% in March 2023

The median price for a single family home on Maui increased 1.9% to $1,200,000, according to the Realtors Association of Maui. The last time Maui’s median was above $1.2 million was in June of 2022 when the median was $1.242M.

Urgent need for fosters: 120 dogs at Maui Humane Society, but capacity is for only 40

Maui Humane Society currently has 120 dogs in their care and has kennel capacity for 40 dogs. Dogs are being paired in kennels to make additional space. 30 SOS Fosters are needed immediately to help decrease the dog population at the shelter.

Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association reaches tentative contract deal

The Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association has reached a tentative, four-year contract settlement for 13,500 teachers represented by the union. The deal proposes approximately 14.5% pay increases over the four-year contract.

Surfrider’s water quality monitoring expands; reports ongoing pollution in Wailuku River

The Surfrider Foundation’s Blue Water Task Force program had two important additions this year, including a new lab site at Pāʻia Youth and Cultural Center. In addition, Surfrider Maui partnered with community members from Hāna to collect water quality samples there for the first time.  Topping the list, for the second year in a row, is Wailuku Stream with 27% of samples exceeding health standards in 2022.

Ka Lā ‘Ōnohi Mai O Ha‘eha‘e under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula Tracie & Keawe Lopes of Oʻahu took the overall title at the 60th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival, in Hilo Hawaiʻi. From Maui, the seven men of Hālau Kekuaokalā‘au‘ala‘iliahi, under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula Haunani & ʻIliahi Paredes of Wailuku, took first place honors in the kāne kahiko and earned 4th place in the kāne ʻauana division. Their combined effort earned them the Overall Kāne title for the second year in a row. ʻĪao Valley State Monument reopens May 1, reservations now needed for out-of-state visitors

Following a nine-month closure, for slope stabilization work, ‘Īao Valley State Monument on Maui is scheduled to reopen on May 1, 2023. The DLNR Division of State Parks announced the reopening saying it will also mark the fourth Hawai‘i state park to require advance reservations for out-of-state visitors. 

Four Maui hālau compete in 60th Merrie Monarch hula festival

Maui has four hālau competing in the 2023 Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, as the event concludes this evening at the Edith Kanakaʻole Stadium in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. Friday night the competition featured kahiko or ancient hula. Tonight, groups will perform ʻauana or modern hula, followed by results from the 60th event.

Agnes Renee Leihiwahiwaikapolionāmakua Thronas Brown was named Miss Aloha Hula 2023 at the 60th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival on Thursday night at the Edith Kanakaʻole Stadium in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. This is the third year in a row that the hālau from Pūʻahuʻula, Koʻolaupoko, Oʻahu took top honors in the soloist competition. Maui’s own Karlee Pōhaikealoha Rita Chong-Kee of Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi, under the direction of Nā Kumu Haunani and ʻIliahi Paredes, brought home the 4th place award.

Study suggests Molokini is being “overused”

Overall, the team’s findings suggest that “Molokini is being overused, and that management is needed to improve not only ecosystem health but the visitor experience,” said Russell Sparks, DLNR Aquatic Biologist.
