53 tons of marine debris removed from Papahānaumokuākea

A team from the Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project, a Hawaiʻi-based nonprofit organization, returned to Honolulu recently aboard the 185-ft ship M/V Imua with another 53 tons (105,655 pounds) of marine debris removed from reefs and beaches of the islands and atolls within the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

Day 5: Maui Fire Department air and ground crews battle stubborn West Maui wildfire

On Day 5 of firefighting efforts, air crews aboard three Maui Fire Department helicopters continued making water drops in hard-to-reach areas of the West Maui Mountains. The battle continues against a 2,100 acre wildfire that started late Tuesday morning in Kauaula Valley. Containment remained at 40%.

A stubborn brush fire continued to burn in the uppermost elevations of the West Maui Mountains this morning, mauka of areas between Kahoma and Launiupoko, according to the Maui Fire Department.

Rule change approved: Permits required for use of lay nets in state waters

Department officials say permits will allow DAR to track the number of lay net fishers on a yearly basis. It will also promote compliance with lay net regulations and help DLNR’s Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement crack down on the illegal use of lay nets.

Day 1: Swift-moving fire in West Maui starts in Kauaula Valley, scorches 1,200 acres

Maui police officers were going door to door this afternoon to alert residents living in the upper portions of the Launiupoko Subdivision that they may need to evacuate if a brush fire spreading along mountain ridges above them moves toward their homes later this afternoon.
