Minor Quake Shakes Kawaihae on Hawaii Island
The Hawaii Volcanoes Observatory reported a preliminary magnitude 3.7 earthquake at 6:4 p.m. (HST) on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 . The quake was centered about 12 miles west of Kawaihae, 16 miles west north west of Waikoloa, 19 miles south west of Hawi, and 27 miles north of Kailua.
Schofield Soldier Killed in Combat on Christmas Day
The Department of Defense today confirmed the death of a soldier from Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Staff Sgt. Joseph J. Altmann, 27, of Marshfield, Wis. suffered fatal injuries when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire.
Kahikinui Koa Forest Protection and Restoration
The state is proposing the construction of an enclosure fence around approximately 2,350 acres of native remnant koa forest on the Leeward side of Haleakala.
Kihei H.S. Would Serve 1,650 Upon Completion
The State of Hawaii, Department of Education, proposes to develop the new high school on approximately 77 acres of undeveloped land, mauka of Piilani Highway. The proposed site is located across from the Piilani Village residential subdivision in the Kihei-Makena region.

6-8 Foot Surf Expected on East Side
A High Surf Advisory is in effect for the East facing shores of Maui and Molokai until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. Forecasters from the National Weather Service say surf will be in the 6 to 8 foot range, and remain elevated through Monday night.
Windy Conditions at Haleakala Summit
A Wind Advisory is in effect for the summit of Haleakala until 6 p.m. on Monday, December 26, 2011. Winds are expected to be east at 25 to 30 mph range with gusts up 50 mph through this afternoon.
UPDATE: Teen Identified in Mokulele Traffic Fatality
Maui police have identified the male pedestrian killed in an afternoon traffic accident on the Mokulele Highway on Christmas Eve as 17-year-old Zachariah Aubut.
Traffic Advisory: Mokulele Hwy Christmas Eve Accident
As of 4:23 p.m., the Mokulele Highway was completely open in both directions. Maui police had closed the Kahului-bound lanes for about three-and-a-half hours while they conducted an investigation into a fatal traffic accident near the Maui Raceway Park on the Mokulele Highway. 9 Maui Burglaries Reported Dec. 11 to 17, 2011
Maui police responded to 9 residential burglaries over a seven day period, between December 11 and 17, 2011. The incidents included two cases each in Kihei and Kula; and single cases in Hana, Kahului, Lahaina, Makawao, and Maunaloa.

Maui Crime Lab and Forensic Facility Fully Operational By Year’s End
The facility was dedicated on December 28, 2010, but the Police Department only recently received a Certificate of Occupancy from the County of Maui. The new facility, county officials say, has the capacity to hold a maximum of 70 bodies in two separate walk-in refrigerators. The current location at the Maui Memorial Medical Center only has four holding drawers for the deceased.
Afternoon Accident Slows Traffic on Honoapiiani Highway
The vehicles involved in the accident were cleared from the roadway by 5:45 p.m., but it was taking some time for traffic to resume its normal flow.
Waiehu Siren Overnight Malfunction
Officials with the Maui Civil Defense agency say the incident occurred at around 2 a.m. at a single siren located off of Waiehu Beach Road.
