Maui police call in bomb squad to assess ordnance found off Pūlehu Road
The Maui Police Department called in the Hawaiʻi Inter-Island Bomb Squad to assess reports of possible military ordnance found off of Pūlehu Road, Wednesday afternoon. The device was found at around 1:50 p.m. on July 30, 2025, about a quarter mile mauka of the Central Maui Landfill.
Maui police recover ordnance from shoreline in Olowalu
Maui police recovered a suspicious object emitting smoke on the shoreline in Olowalu, Monday afternoon. Patrol officers arrived at around 12:23 p.m. to a report of a fire-related type case near mile 16 of the Honoapiʻilani Highway.

Maui police issued an update today saying their investigation into the improvised explosive device (IED) incident that occurred in Pukalani on Aug. 8, 2024 remains active. Police said that they are unable to share investigative details at this time because they do not want to compromise the investigation; however, authorities anticipate being able to release information in the near future.

Update: Special Response Team renders device safe at Kahului intersection; suspected IED was likely an improvised pyrotechnic device
At approximately 8:20 a.m., SRT personnel and an MPD Bomb Technician performed an X-ray of the device before rendering the device safe via a water disruption shot. Upon further investigation, it was determined the contents were more likely an improvised pyrotechnic device rather than an IED.

An unexploded ordnance, which appeared to be a mortar, was discovered by employees at a Kīhei recycling company within their metals collection area Tuesday. The discovery prompted response from the Hawaiʻi Inter-Island Bomb Squad to the business on East Welakahao Road following notification on Wednesday.

Maui police evacuated nearby residents and closed area streets following a single vehicle accident in which police, while conducting a crash investigation, discovered two PVC pipes resembling improvised explosive devices within the involved vehicle.
