#Crater Road

The state Department of Transportation will be conducting road work this week that will result in lane closures at various locations. There will be no lane closures on Monday, Sept. 7 in observance of the Labor Day holiday, unless permitted Lane closure schedules may change at any time without further notice.

Hawaiian Electric contractors are replacing a pole along Haleakalā Highway/Crater Road, between Kekaulike Avenue and Palena Place, that will impact traffic on Thursday, Sept. 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. No service interruption is expected.

The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park remains closed following recent storms and the ongoing closure of Crater Road (Route 378). Recovery efforts, including hazard tree removal, continue along the roadway.

Crews with the state Department of Transportation are preparing facilities and working to remove vegetation from streams and saturated hillsides on all islands in preparation for heavy rain forecast with the approach of Tropical Storm Moke.

All airports are now open, but some flights are still being canceled or are experiencing delays. Many highways across the state continue to be impacted by downed trees, debris, flooding and power outages affecting traffic signals.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is notifying the public that one lane on Crater Road (Route 378) will be closed beginning on Monday, Aug. 10 for permanent striping work. Traffic will be alternated in the open lane.

Travel on Hāna Highway into East Maui is limited to emergency vehicles, essential workers and local traffic due to ongoing repair work and dangerous conditions. MPD has checkpoint enforcement from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily on Hāna Highway. Haleakalā National Park’s summit remains closed, according to the National Park Service. The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation notifies highway users that paving on Crater Road (Route 378) is set to begin on Thursday, Aug. 7 following delays as the project was initially set to begin July 14.

Motorists are advised that paving on Crater Road (Route 378) is set to begin on Monday, July 14, with completion scheduled in October.

The Kula Community Association (KCA) has formally called on Gov. Josh Green and the State of Hawaiʻi to take urgent action in advance of what is expected to be another challenging wildfire season in Upcountry Maui.

Motorists on Maui are advised of potential traffic delays beginning Monday, Nov. 25, as crews check pavement quality on 13 state highways on the island. The data will allow HDOT to be proactive in repairing roads before they show signs of distress.

Crater Road has reopened to through traffic as of 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024. The road had been closed since July 27 as a safety precaution as crews continued work to contain the 574-acre Crater Road Fire which began on July 10.

Crater Road will be closed for a week as of Saturday morning as a safety precaution amid an active 574-acre Crater Road fire nearby, County of Maui officials announced.

County of Maui officials announced today, July 24, 2024, that Crater Road is scheduled to reopen at noon; however, if conditions become unsafe, the road will again be closed.  Portions of Crater Road have been closed since July 10 due to the ongoing Crater Road fire in Upper Kula, which remains at 80% containment and 574 acres.

“It’s distressing to all of us, even if it’s not coming right in our nearest vicinity, it’s still triggering, as it would be for anybody, either in Lahaina or Kula, that went through what we went through last year,” said Melissa James of The Ohana Animal Inn in Kula.

Update (8 p.m., July 11, 2024): Due to improving conditions Maui County officials have lifted the advisory as of 6:37 p.m. for residents in affected areas to prepare for potential evacuations. Maui Fire Department crews will remain on scene overnight to monitor the fire. Acreage of the fire decreased from 420 to 355 due to more accurate mapping assessments.
