The Maui Police Department kicked off its impaired driving enforcement campaign, which will run through the Memorial Day weekend. The MPD Traffic Division will be conducting sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols as part of the increased enforcement effort. The public can also expect an increase in police presence utilizing unmarked vehicles. 

Maui police issue 383 citations, 68 warnings for traffic violations in February

The Maui Police Department, Traffic Division issued 383 citations and 68 warnings for various traffic violations and infractions in February. For the month of February, the DUI Task Force, along with other officers from the Solo Bike Detail and the Vehicular Homicide Unit, made 33 arrests of motorists operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant, and 27 arrests for various other offenses.

73-year-old man on bike dies after being struck by truck on Front Street in Lahaina

A 73-year-old male from Lahaina was riding an electric bike on Front Street Saturday night when he was struck from behind by a truck whose driver was impaired. The cyclist later died of his injuries at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

One of those arrests was made on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, during the Maui Police Department’s Cinco De Mayo impaired driving enforcement campaign. Under the authority of the Maui County Tow Ordinance MPD Traffic officers towed the vehicle following the impaired driving arrest.
