The 4th Annual Carmen Hulu Lindsey Leo Ha‘iha‘i Falsetto Contest took place on Friday evening at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, honoring the art of leo ha‘iha‘i (Hawaiian falsetto) and celebrating Hawai‘i’s musical traditions. The event crowned its fourth Falsetto Champion, Kellysa-Michiko Namakaokalani Pau‘ole of Waikapū, Maui.

Koakāne Mattos of Makawao captured the top honor at the 23rd annual Richard Ho‘opi‘i Leo Kiʻekiʻe Falsetto Contest over the weekend with his heartfelt rendition of the Hawaiian classic “Kalamaula.”

This year’s Festivals of Aloha will span September through October, with celebrations across Maui, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, Wailea, Hāna, and Makawao. A schedule of events is posted here.

Both contests honor the legacy and artistry of two of Maui’s most beloved musical treasures—Richard Hoʻopiʻi and Carmen Hulu Lindsey—while nurturing the next generation of falsetto performers.

Maui’s own Antonio Robles of Wailuku, earned the championship title at the 22nd annual Richard Ho‘opi‘i Leo Kiʻekiʻe Falsetto Contest, held at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua on Saturday night, Sept. 21, 2024. He was honored for his performance of Hawaiʻi standard “Waikaloa.” The competition featured six contestants–four from Maui, and two from O’ahu.

Festivals of Aloha has announced its 2024 theme, “Ka Laʻi o Hauola – The Calm of Hauola,” honoring the revered Pōhakuohauola (Hauola Stone) of Lahaina, a historic symbol of healing and restoration. As Maui Nui communities continue to recover from the devastating wildfires of Aug. 8, 2023, this year’s theme reflects the collective hope for peace and comfort, echoing the stone’s ancient legacy of health and renewal, organizers said.

Now in its third year, the c Carmen Hulu Lindsey Leo Ha’iha’i Falsetto Contest will be held on Friday, Oct. 25, 2024, at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. Doors to the Ballroom open at 5:30 p.m., and the contest will commence at 6 p.m. Admission is free.

The 22nd Richard Ho‘opi‘i Leo Kiʻekiʻe Falsetto Contest is seeking contestants. The contest will be held at the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024 at 6 p.m. Applicants may apply online by Sept. 6, 2024.

The 2023 Festivals of Aloha culminates this month with the 21st Richard Ho‘opi‘i Falsetto Contest on Saturday, and events next week on the island of Molokaʻi.

For entertainment this week on Maui, there’s the Maui Veterans Day Invitational Kayak Clash, the 21st Annual Falsetto Contest, a free performance by The Voice contestant Jason Arcilla, debuts of Makana’s song “Lahainalalo,” and a recital by classical pianist Mahana Teave as part of a Wildfire Benefit Concert Series.

Lahela Park, the first champion of the Hulu Lindsay Leo Haʻihaʻi contest held at the Celebration of the Arts at the Ritz Carlton, will perform a farewell concert at the Westin Maui Resort and Spa, at the exclusive Lanai venue this Friday night, April 7, from 9-11 p.m. She will be previewing new music for an upcoming single release, during the concert.

An impressive feast of friendship, food, music, dance, and vocals will be on display at the much-anticipated Celebration of Island Tastes and Carmen Hulu Lindsey Leo Ha‘iha‘i Falsetto Contest.

Heua‘olu Sai-Dudoit of Hilo, Hawaiʻi earned the championship title at the 20th annual Richard Ho‘opi‘i Leo Kiʻekiʻe Falsetto Contest, held at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua on Saturday night, Sept. 24.

Hāna’s own Lahela Lee Park of Kawaipapa won the inaugural Carmen Hulu Lindsey Leo Ha‘iha‘i Falsetto Contest, held Saturday night as part of the 30th annual Celebration of the Arts at the The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua.

Maui’s Kaulike Pescaia earned the championship title at the 2018 Richard Hoʻopiʻi Leo Kiʻekiʻe Falsetto Contest held last night at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua.
