Cold front moves over Maui County, heavy rain and thunderstorms in forecast

Most island remain under a flood watch through this afternoon as a cold front moves through Oʻahu and into the islands of Maui County this morning.

An unstable tropical moisture band will keep widespread rainfall in the forecast, heavy at times, with developing thunderstorms across much of the state.

Flood Watch for Maui and Hawai‘i Island Until Late Tuesday Night

Recent and persistent rainfall, especially over the east end of the island chain, has caused soils to become saturated and streams to be elevated along windward areas of Maui and the Big Island. An upper trough moving into the area along with abundant low level moisture, creates the potential for flash flooding.

The threat of heavy rain will initially be greatest over Hawaiʻi Island and Maui, starting late Tuesday night; then gradually shift westward over the remainder of Maui County late Wednesday.
