Maui Emergency Management Agency, other County of Maui departments / agencies and the American Red Cross will proactively open shelters across Maui at 5 p.m. today, April 8, 2026, ahead of severe weather impacts. 

Three shelters on Maui closed at 5 p.m., March 22, 2026, as weather conditions from the kona storm 2 improved and shelter numbers declined, according to Maui Emergency Management Agency. Two shelters – one in South Maui and one on Moloka’i – remain open.

Maui Emergency Management Agency, County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation and the American Red Cross will reopen a Central Maui shelter at Baldwin High School gym, 1650 Kaʻahumanu Ave., Wailuku, at 7 tonight, March 21, 2026, due to recent road closures and evacuation warnings from kona storm 2.

MEMA is working with local and state partners to assess damage from the storm. There are still multiple road closures and traffic advisories in place. This is an updated recap of storm impacts, response, and resources on Maui.

Maui Fire Department conducted floodwater rescues overnight in South Maui; also last night, dozens of people, who are now at a shelter, were cut off in Hāna due to road washout. Over the last 14 hours, some areas received more than 20 inches of rain (Kula) and wind gusts more than 70 mph (Kaunakakai).

In coordination with the Maui Emergency Management Agency and County of Maui Department of Human Concerns, the American Red Cross opened a shelter on Lānaʻi shortly before 1 p.m. today at Lānai High & Elementary School Gym. Another shelter is scheduled to open at 4:30 p.m. today at the Hāna High School cafeteria.

Eddie Tam Memorial Center in Makawao will open at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30, as an emergency shelter for those stranded by the Piʻilani Highway closure in East Maui.
