#Historic Lahaina Town

The Lahaina Restoration Foundation has received a $30,000 donation from Bishop Clark Zenkyu Watanabe of the Koyasan Shingon Mission of Hawaiʻi and Rev. Takayuki Meguro of the Lahaina Shingon Mission to aid in the restoration of Lahaina’s historic sites damaged by the August 2023 wildfires, per an announcement Friday.

The death toll from the Lahaina fire has risen to 111, with the identity of six victims publicly released by police. An estimated 58% of the burn area has been searched. The wildfire is described as the nation’s deadliest in 100 years.

Maui residents affected by the recent wildfires can apply for federal disaster assistance at a joint Disaster Recovery Center that has opened in Kahului, and will continue daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College.

The fires were driven by hurricane force winds with 80 mph gusts as system Dora passed well south of the Hawaiian Islands on Tuesday, Aug. 8. The largest fires in Kula and Lahaina are still active burn areas where firefighting efforts continue. The wildfire is described as the nation’s deadliest in a 100 years.

The popular Friday Night is Art Night is back and is being held weekly at art galleries in Lahaina every Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.  Enjoy Lahaina’s art scene, meet the artists, view new artwork and enjoy live music.

Take a step back into Lahaina’s past as Candle Lit Tours return to the Baldwin Home Museum on Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m., alongside a new, free Historic photography exhibit. The tours and exhibits will be held weekly in conjunction with Friday Night is Art Night.

“Tabora Gallery Lahaina is a brand new business and we are busting at the seams to get going. We’ve been waiting to open the doors and we finally were able to do it,” said Anne Wood. Other Front Street stores that opened on Thursday included: CocoNēnē, West Maui Gifts, Maui Jewelers, Billabong and Honolula Surf.

Lahaina Restoration Foundation announced the return of of their candle lit tours of the Baldwin Home Museum beginning Friday, Sept. 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. The home tour will return alongside a new exhibit featuring historic photographs of sports teams from the Pioneer Mill era.
