King Kekaulike swept both the boys and girls divisions at the second Maui Interscholastic League surf contest of the season on Saturday at Ho‘okipa Beach Park.

A new lifeguard tower will be installed Sept. 1 at Hoʻokipa Beach Park, and the park will be closed to the public on that day, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced. The park will reopen on Sept. 2 during normal hours, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Resident Justin Edwards tells Maui Now that he has been advocating for safe parking for two years now, since the start of the pandemic, and often sees cars lined along the Hāna Highway, “forcing people to unload their cars and cross the busy highway, often in low light conditions, or with the sun directly in their eyes.”

Crews arrived on scene and confirmed that one paddler, a 70-year-old Haʻikū man was missing, and the other paddler, a 57-year-old Haʻikū woman was aboard the vessel, which was drifting downwind, approximately a quarter mile from shore.

Waters at Wailuku River, Waiehu Stream, the west end of Hoʻokipa Beach Park, and Waiʻehu Beach Park had high levels of enterococcus bacteria, according to samples taken on Sept. 24, as part of a citizen scientist program conducted by the Surfrider Foundation. 

Shark warning signs were posted along the Hamakuapoko coastline on Maui after a large shark was observed in nearshore waters off of Hoʻokipa Beach Park on Wednesday afternoon.
