#Kamehameha V Highway

As part of ongoing efforts to harden the electrical grid and reduce wildfire risk on Molokaʻi, Hawaiian Electric crews will begin its first targeted area of replacing existing copper power lines with new aluminum conductors along East Kamehameha V Highway between Onioni Drive and ʻUalapuʻe from Saturday, Oct. 3 through Thursday, Oct. 8 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The project includes replacing 8 miles of power lines and upgrading 27 poles.

On Molokaʻi, crews are working on planning and design for culvert replacement at Keawanui Gulch along Kamehameha V Highway. This work is estimated to begin in early September. The contractor will begin this culvert replacement work at the same time as culvert replacement along Maunaloa Highway at Kākalahale Stream.

Two people died as a result of a rollover accident involving a Polaris utility terrain vehicle (UTV) near Hālawa Valley Park on Molokaʻi, Saturday. The incident occurred on at around 10:57 p.m. on Aug. 8, 2026, on Kamehameha V Highway near Mile 28.

Travel on Hāna Highway into East Maui is limited to emergency vehicles, essential workers and local traffic due to ongoing repair work and dangerous conditions. MPD has checkpoint enforcement from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily on Hāna Highway. Haleakalā National Park’s summit remains closed, according to the National Park Service. The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation completed emergency road repairs on Kamehameha V Highway (Route 450) on Moloka‘i and is reopening the eastbound lane at mile post 18.7 near Waialua Stream on Tuesday, Oct. 7.

The Heart of Aloha Church and Tenrikyo Molokaʻi received the Adopt-A-Highway Nō Ka ʻOi Highway Hui Award for the fourth quarter of 2024 and first quarter of 2025, respectively. *WARNING/GRAPHIC CONTENT: Maui police released body camera images from a deadly shooting reported Sunday on Molokaʻi. Over the course of about three minutes, officers are heard instructing the suspect over 70 times to drop a machete, and 29 times to move back. The man, later identified as 40-year-old Nathaniel Naki, was holding a two foot machete during the confrontation.

A group of Molokaʻi residents has been recognized for its environmental volunteerism for the Adopt-A-Highway program in Maui Nui.

A flash flood watch remains in effect for all islands until 6 p.m. today. Although a warning was lifted, road and park closures continue.

Emergency crews were called to assist a Molokai couple early this morning when they awoke to find their home flooded with water almost to their knees.
