A 66-year-old woman from Canada was injured when a rock from a landslide struck the vehicle she was in, on a remote section of the Piʻilani Highway Sunday morning. A rock from the landslide penetrated the roof of the vehicle and struck the woman, who was in the rear seat.

Piʻilani Highway remained closed between ʻUlupalakua and Nuʻu on Friday morning after a kona low resulted in heavy rain and flooding in East Maui on Thursday.

The County of Maui will hold three community meetings for residents and businesses impacted by the emergency road closure at the Alelele Point area in East Maui. This comes after recent rockfalls in the area.

“We’ve been in this position before with boulders falling from a hillside in Kalihi Valley several times during a 10-year period,” said State Representative John Mizuno (D-29 Kalihi Valley, Kamehameha Heights, portion of Lower Kalihi) in a news release. “Unfortunately, much of the rockslides or boulders coming down are both related to the rainy weather and the location, usually along a hillside which naturally has a gravitational pull once the surrounding soil turns to mud.”

As of late Wednesday afternoon, a 1.5 mile stretch of highway remained closed from mile 35.5 in Kaupō to mile 37 in Kīpahulu.

Crews from the Maui Department of Public Works have cleared a portion of Piʻilani Highway from Kanaio to Kahikinui, but landslides and roadway damage continue to keep the highway impassable from mile marker 31 through 39.

Piʻilani Highway between Mile Markers 36-37 in Kaupō will be closed due to past landslides. The closure is being implemented by the County of Maui Highway Division.

Maui Civil Defense reported several landslides, including on the Honoapiʻilani Highway (Hwy 30) on the Wailuku side of the tunnel, and on the Kula Highway near Mile 18 in ʻUlupalakua.

The public is invited to identify solutions to problems associated with natural hazard threats such as wildfires, significant beach erosion and highway rockslides.
