Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Hawaiʻi held its annual Law Enforcement Recognition ceremony on Thursday, June 25 to honor the dedicated individuals who have gone above and beyond in the fight against impaired driving.

The event is a time to come together as a community and celebrate the life of Hannah Brown, as well as all those whose lives were cut short by an impaired driver. The goal is to remind the public of the dangers of impaired driving and to ask everyone to make a wise choice this holiday season: Don’t Drive Impaired.

In a continued effort to protect the health, safety and well-being of residents and visitors, Mayor Richard T. Bissen, Jr. has officially proclaimed April 2025 as Alcohol Awareness Month in the County of Maui.

The night before Thanksgiving, often referred to as “Blackout Wednesday,” has become a popular night for socializing and drinking — but it also comes with a higher risk of impaired driving crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Sober driving advocates will once again introduce legislation this session seeking to lower Hawaiʻi’s legal blood alcohol concentration level for driving from 0.08 to 0.05 percent. This is the fourth consecutive session that the Hawai‘i Alcohol Policy Alliance has supported such a bill.

The rally comes ahead of the holidays and during a year when traffic fatalities have spiked nearly 50% from the previous year.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving is urging everyone to make a plan for a designated driver before Halloween weekend begins. MADD is concerned anytime a holiday falls on a weekend when the risk of drunk driving deaths and injuries is higher.

Drunk driving is completely preventable yet claimed 172 lives nationwide from 6 p.m. Friday to 5:59 a.m. Monday during the 2019 Memorial Day weekend, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Additionally, alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating crashes, accounting for nearly a quarter of these deaths, according to a 2019 report on recreational boating by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving Hawaii virtually kicked off its “Tie One On for Safety” red ribbon campaign, promoting safe driving through the holidays and upcoming year. Drivers across the country will display MADD red ribbons on their vehicles as a promise to plan ahead and designate a non-drinking driver.

Lawmakers say the new law provides officers with another tool to deter motorists from getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.

In 2018, 35 people in Hawaiʻi died in alcohol-related crashes, or 30% of the total traffic fatalities for last year. MADD’s Tie One On for Safety Campaign…

AAA Hawaiʻi is offering a “tipsy tow” service on New Year’s Eve as a last resort for individuals needing a ride home after drinking. The tow is unique in that it provides a driver with a safe ride home for themselves and their vehicle instead of driving while intoxicated.
