‘Molokini Mantas’ break record for fastest Maui-Molokini-Maui channel swim

On Saturday morning, a special pod of “Mantas” was sighted in the waters of Molokini, three miles off Maui’s southern coast. Dubbed the “Molokini Mantas,” the group of nine Hawaiʻi swimmers were en route back to Maui, and upon reaching the Maui shore, they had set a new record for the fastest channel swim from Maluaka to and around Molokini and back.

BLNR to consider ocean stewardship user fee, Molokini Marine Life Conservation District

The Hawai‘i Board of Land and Natural Resources will be asked to approve a new chapter in Hawai‘i Administrative Rules to enable an ocean stewardship user fee during its meeting on Friday. BLNR will also consider amendments to the Molokini Shoal Marine Life Conservation District to reduce crowding at the islet.

US Coast Guard responds to medical emergency at Molokini Crater

A 70-year-old female passenger was found unresponsive while snorkeling and was quickly brought back onboard the passenger vessel Ocean Odyssey. Although she regained consciousness, a Coast Guard crew on Maui medevaced the woman for further care.

Study suggests Molokini is being “overused”

Overall, the team’s findings suggest that “Molokini is being overused, and that management is needed to improve not only ecosystem health but the visitor experience,” said Russell Sparks, DLNR Aquatic Biologist.
