Maui Public Art Corps and the County of Maui unveiled the new Lahaina Think Space on April 1, with a traditional blessing led by Uncle Bill Garcia and hosted by Sissy Lake-Farm, Cultural Consultant for Maui Public Art Corps. The gathering marked the opening of a month-long interactive residency at Lahainaluna High School designed to center student voices and community storytelling as part of early conversations surrounding Lahaina’s future memorial spaces.

The sixth Hui Mo‘olelo cohort has completed a weeklong storytelling training designed to preserve local voices and inspire public art projects on Maui.

A blessing and public unveiling will be held on Friday, June 27, for three new murals installed across the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College campus.

Produced by Maui Public Art Corps in collaboration with the County of Maui and kumu hula Sissy Lake-Farm of Hālau Makana Aloha O Ka Lauaʻe, the piece is one of three large-scale murals being unveiled in June through the Hui Mo‘olelo program, which pairs professional artists with community members to create place-based public art.

A new performance blending hula, contemporary dance and storytelling is set to premiere in Wailuku this June, created by acclaimed Native Hawaiian choreographer Christopher Kaui Morgan and inspired by queer Hawaiian moʻolelo.

Following nine months of programming and development, a mural spread across the temporary campus of King Kamehameha III Elementary School will be blessed on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024. The community is invited to participate in the event, which begins promptly at 12:30 p.m. 

A mural surrounding the temporary Kaiser Permanente Lahaina Clinic will be painted beginning this week, with a blessing and public unveiling scheduled for the end of November 2024. The project is part of the Maui Public Art Corps’ Hui Mo‘olelo: Lahaina program, which cultivates stories celebrating Lahaina history, culture and sense of place and engages community members to co-design art that is directly rooted in these stories.

The first of the series will be a talk story with Naomi “Sissy” Lake-Farm, Executive Director of the Maui Historical Society/Hale Hō’ike’ike at the Bailey House. She will be joined by Kelly McHugh-White of Maui Public Art Corps. Both women have been active in the Wailuku Town revitalization movement through the SMALL TOWN * BIG ART initiative.

SMALL TOWN * BIG ART will unveil a collection of film shorts on Dec. 20 that celebrate Maui County’s history, culture and sense of place.

Arizona-based artist Bobby Zokaites and his studio assistant Kara Roschi are on a weeklong site visit to Wailuku to learn about its history, culture and sense of place for a sculpture they will create for a SMALL TOWN * BIG ART and Imua Discovery Garden project.

Maui Historical Society began the process of applying for permits to repair and shore up the South Rooftop of the glorious Hale Ho’ike’ike at the Bailey House Museum building – originally built in 1842.

Premiering tonight, Monday, July 12, at 7 p.m. is Maui’s own big wave surfer, community advocate and YouTube cooking sensation Ian Walsh. A new episode will air every Monday for the next 12 weeks at 7 p.m. on Spectrum OC16.

Beginning on Monday, June 14, a hui of four Maui-grown artists: Alexandra Underwood, Amanda Joy Bowers, Bailey Onaga and Courtney Chargin, will begin painting a collection of three pieces that will serve as the temporary construction wall surrounding the Wailuku municipal parking lot.
