Haleakalā National Park closed as of 10 a.m. due to severe weather

Due to worsening conditions Haleakalā National Park will close today at 10 a.m. The park will remain closed through noon on Friday when conditions are expected to improve.

The highest peak on Maui was graced with snow this morning as blustery conditions left a blanket of white powder at the summit of Haleakalā at the 10,000 foot elevation.

Haleakalā National Park Summit District reopens, snow melts

The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park reopened at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022. The Headquarters Visitor Center at 7,000 feet remained open until 4 p.m. The Haleakalā Visitor Center at 9,740 feet remains closed however the parking lot and restrooms are open.

The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park is temporarily closed due to winter weather conditions effective April 11, 2021 at 3 p.m. The closure begins at the Summit Entrance Station on Haleakalā Highway extending up to the summit. The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park will reopen once conditions improve.

There is a temporary road closure in Haleakalā National Park due to winter weather conditions. The Haleakalā Highway temporary closure begins at Kalahaku Overlook (9,324 feet) and extends up to the summit of Haleakalā.

Another Dusting of Snow Forecast for Haleakalā

Additional snow accumulations of 1-3 inches and ice accumulations of around one-tenth of an inch is in the forecast, with winds gusting as high as 120 mph.

Snow and freezing rain fell over Haleakala on Maui as the summit was added to a winter storm warning overnight.  The warning remains in effect until noon today with additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches.

A mix of rain, snow and freezing rain are expected at the Summit of Haleakalā overnight. The NWS issued a Winter Weather Warning overnight advising against travel to the location due to hazardous conditions. Maui last saw snow atop Haleakalā during a winter storm last year that forced the closure of the summit for at least six days.
