Next week is the last week to get holiday gifts and greetings in the mail by the recommended deadlines. Customer traffic at all Post Office locations has been steadily increasing since Dec. 1, and this week is expected to be the busiest of the year.

Customers can expect their mail and packages to be delivered, on average, in less than 3 days this holiday season. Holiday customers can expect a 2– to 3-day turnaround when shipping to addresses within their same regional service area.

The US Postal Service will observe the Thanksgiving federal holiday on Thursday, Nov. 27. All Post Office locations will be closed and only Priority Mail Express will be delivered that day. Regular mail delivery and retail services will resume on Friday, Nov. 28.

US Congressman Ed Case (D-Hawaiʻi) has led an effort that highlighted problems with mail delivery to Hawai‘i and US territories, prompting the United States Postal Service to undertake corrective actions that “will improve the timely and accurate processing and transportation of mail that is designed for deliver in areas outside the 48 contiguous states.”

Procrastinators have until Friday, Dec. 20 to send their holiday cheer to the Mainland US via USPS expedited Priority Express shipping service. USPS notes that these dates apply to mail received by each Post Office’s cutoff time.

More than 5,800 US Postal Service employees across the nation were attacked by dogs in 2020. In Hawaiʻi, 19 mail delivery personnel were bit by dogs, a 58% increase over the previous year’s total of 12. USPS is providing the public with the do’s and don’ts of responsible dog ownership as part of its annual National Dog Bite Awareness Week.
