Hawaiian Electric reached a restoration milestone on Hawaiʻi Island with the successful return of a key transmission line from Pāhala to Kīlauea, allowing crews to return power to customers in Pāhala. Work continues around the clock to restore approximately 1,600 customers remaining without power.

Hawaiian Electric crews continued to make steady progress across Hawaiʻi Island, restoring service to more than 1,400 customers since yesterday as additional equipment and resources arrive to support the ongoing recovery efforts.

Lava fountaining episode 52 in Halemaʻumaʻu at the summit of Kīlauea began around 7:10 p.m. HST July 28 and ended at 2:36 a.m. HST on July 29, 2026, after 7.4 hours of continuous fountaining from the north vent.

Lava fountaining episode 51 in Halemaʻumaʻu at the summit of Kīlauea began around 8:30 a.m. on July 15 and ended abruptly at 4:46 p.m., after 8.3 hours of continuous fountaining from the north vent.

April marked the 100-year anniversary of Mauna Loa’s 1926 Southwest Rift Zone eruption. This eruption is most remembered for the destruction of Ho‘ōpūloa village, a few miles north of Miloliʻi Bay. It also marks the first known instance of aerial photography of an advancing Hawaiian lava flow, and well-organized police-led eruption crowd management.

Episode 47 of lava fountaining during the ongoing episodic summit eruption of the Big Island volcano tied the 1983-86 initial phase of the Pu‘u‘ō‘ō eruption on Kīlauea, which had a total of 47 events, for the most fountaining episodes ever recorded — so far — at the volcano; so how do these historic eruptions compare?

Letter comes as President Donald Trump’s administration attempts to close several US Forest Service research facilities, including Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry in Hilo on Hawaiʻi Island.

Precursory activity at Kīlauea on Hawaiʻi Island has paused, but an episodic fountaining eruption is forecast to occur sometime between today and April 15.  Fountaining episodes typically last less than 12 hours but ash can remain in the air longer depending on wind and weather.

Episode 28 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption ended abruptly at 1:20 p.m. HST on July 9, 2025, after 9 hours of continuous fountaining, the final 8 of which were high fountaining.

Episode 24 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption at Kīlauea began just before 9 p.m. last night, and featured lava fountaining from the north vent reaching 980 feet.  Scientists with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory say the fountain generated a plume that reached 16,500 feet above ground level.  The episode ended abruptly at 4:28 a.m. today.

Record-setting lava fountain and plume heights were reached during Episode 23 of the Kīlauea summit caldera eruption. Given increasing airborne hazards associated with each new eruptive episode, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is changing its episode notification types.

Lava fountains reach more than 1,000 feet, volcanic plume soars at least 5,000 feet before most recent phase of eruptive activity — that teased for several days — abruptly ends after just 6 hours and 10 minutes Sunday night.

Episode 21 of the ongoing Kīlauea eruption at Halemaʻumaʻu ended shortly after 8:30 on Sunday night, after about eight hours of sustained fountaining which began at 12:45 p.m. on May 11, 2025. The Halema’uma’u eruption is currently paused.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory remains steadfast and vigilant as lava fountaining episodes continue at the summit of the Big Island’s Kīlauea volcano, maintaining its monitoring and livestreaming of the volcano to document the eruption’s evolution, inform hazard assessments and apprise the public of ongoing volcanic activity.

Episode 20 of the eruption at Kīlauea ended at 9:58 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, after 4.5 hours of sustained fountaining. The Halema’uma’u eruption is currently paused.

The main fountaining of Episode 19 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption at Kīlauea has ended after just 8 hours of activity.  

Episode 16 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption at Kīlauea began at 10:57 p.m. HST on Monday, March 31 with the start of lava overflowing from the north vent.

Episode 13 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 2:36 a.m. on March 10, 2025.  Fountains reached heights of 400-500 feet (120-150 m) by 3:30 a.m. The episode lasted for 12 hours and 37 minutes, ending at 3:13 p.m. on March 11, 2025.

Episode 11 of the ongoing Kīlauea eruption at Halemaʻumaʻu began at  6:26 p.m. HST on Feb. 25, 2025 within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. The intensity and height of fountaining has continued to escalate since the eruption began reaching heights of over 200 feet by 6:50 p.m. HST.
