Powerful kona storm to impact the state this week
A powerful kona storm will begin impacting the western end of the state as early as Tuesday, then spread across the remainder of the island chain by midweek.
Prolonged period of stormy weather in forecast next week
“A strong low pressure system will bring deep moisture over the state, leading to the potential for heavy rain, flash flooding and thunderstorms,” according to the NWS. “The threat for flash flooding could develop over Kaua’i County late Monday, spreading eastward to the entire state Tuesday and Wednesday, and persisting through the rest of the week.”
Monday weather updates: Winds still in the forecast; Flood Watch canceled
The Flash Flood Watch that was in effect for the Hawaiian Islands has since been cancelled. A Wind Warning continues for Maui County and the Big Island until 6 p.m. East winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, with gusts up to 60 mph.

A surface trough near the island of Maui continues to blanket the Hawaiian Islands in deep unstable tropical moisture through Monday. An upper level low just west of the islands and windy trade winds will produce periods of heavy rain, a few thunderstorms and flash flooding threats lasting through Monday afternoon. The highest threat for flash flooding will remain along the windward slopes of each island potentially driven by terrain anchored heavy showers.
Fast-moving cold front to bring wet weather, strong wind impacts to all islands
A rapidly moving cold front will bring strengthening northerly winds and wet weather to all Hawaiian Islands as it passes through each island.
Residents encouraged to review, consider flood insurance as wet season continues
Consumers need to be aware that most standard homeowners and renters insurance policies do not cover flood damage. Flood insurance coverages can be purchased separately from the National Flood Insurance Program or endorsed onto the policy to supplement a policyholder’s homeowners insurance.
Kona low develops NW of the Hawaiian Islands, expected to bring moisture
A developing kona low far northwest of the islands is expected to move southward today, bringing deeper moisture over the western islands the firs half of this week.
Orlene Still Too Far Out to Forecast Impacts to Hawaiʻi Weather
The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor Orlene, which strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane today and remained in Eastern North Pacific waters.
Weather Delays Completion of Haʻikū Road Culvert
Due to constant rain delays, the completion of Haʻikū culvert and embankment repairs project along Haʻikū Road has been pushed back to October 2016, county officials announced.
