Breaking: Maui Managing Director, Kekuhaupio “Keku” Akana retiring

Maui Managing Director, Kekuhaupio “Keku” Akana, will retire from the County of Maui effective Dec. 31. He was Mayor Richard Bissen’s first cabinet appointment following the 2022 elections. In deciding to retire, Akana pointed to wanting to spend more time with his ʻohana including seven grandchildren.

Kīhei fire extinguished, no structures damaged

Maui fire crews quickly worked to knock down flames at a brush fire reported in an empty lot in Kīhei on Tuesday afternoon. The fire was reported at 12:11 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14, along South Kīhei Road near the Walaka Street intersection.

Police publicly identify one more victim of Lahaina fire; bringing total to 99 of 100 known fatalities

The Maui Police Department today identified one more victim of the Aug. 8 Lahaina fire: Sharlene Rabang, 78, of Lahaina.

Government Relations, Ethics and Transparency committee cancels meeting to encourage participation at Native Hawaiian Convention

Council member Nohe Uʻu-Hodgins announced that the Government Relations, Ethics and Transparency Committee has canceled its meeting planned for today (Nov. 14) at 1:30 p.m. to allow council members to attend the 22nd Annual Native Hawaiian Convention. The committee planned to discuss Resolution 23-194, developing a comprehensive recovery and resiliency plan in response to the August wildfires, and is rescheduling the item for Nov. 28, she said.

Red Flag Warning until 6 p.m. for leeward areas of all Hawaiian Islands

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Red Flag Warning for wind and low relative humidity, which is in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today for the leeward areas of all Hawaiian Islands.

Disaster Area Restrictions to be lifted for Zones 1D, 5G, 10F, 14E, 15B and 15C in West Maui

County of Maui Disaster Area Restrictions have been lifted for several rural land zones as of 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 13, 2023, including: 1D, 10F, 14E, 15B, and 15C. Reentry for zone 5G (E. Kuu Aku Lane) is only for areas within the zone that were not affected by the fire. Supported reentry for residents in fire-affected units is expected to be held next week.

Maui County Democrats seek nominees for House Vacancy

Last Thursday, State House Representative Troy N. Hashimoto was appointed by Governor Josh Green, M.D. to fill the Senate District 5 vacancy created by outgoing State Senator Gilbert S.C. Keith-Agaran who resigned on Oct. 31, 2023. This appointment resulted in a seat vacancy for House District 10.

The 22nd Annual Native Hawaiian Convention gets underway today at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului, Maui. The four day event was moved to Maui this year to uplift the voices and people following the Aug. 8 wildfires.

One of three reentry vehicle pass locations briefly moves to MACC

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 14 through 16, 2023, Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement’s Kākoʻo Maui Relief and Aid Services office, which distributes county reentry vehicle passes, will move from Maui Mall Village to Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
