Maui-born 17-year-old surfer Dylan Sloan is bringing his new Hurley-sponsored surf film “Genesis” home for a special one-night premiere on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m. at South Maui Gardens in Kīhei.

The World Surf League Hawaiʻi/Tahiti Nui Qualifying Series The Hawaiian Islands Sunset Pro, a men’s and women’s QS 1000, continues to wait for opening day start as event organizers have called Wednesday, Oct. 30, and Thursday, Oct. 31, OFF. A projected swell for the weekend could see competition get underway with the event needing three days to run. 

On Wednesday in Brazil, Maui’s own Jackson Bunch became the last surfer to make the cut for the World Surf League’s 2025 Championship Tour, as Marco Mignot eliminated Levi Slawson in the quarterfinals at the Corona Saquarema Pro presented by Banco do Brasil.

Maui surfer, Eli Hanneman’s highly-anticipated breakthrough in 2023 now takes him into the Semifinals for a Finals Day showdown where he will face two-time US Open of Surfing winner Kanoa Igarashi (JPN). 

It was an epic day for Maui’s Jackson Bunch who took home his first ever World Surf League win during Finals Day of the Air Tahiti Rangiroa Pro QS 1,000, the final event of the Hawaii/Tahiti Nui 2022/23′ QS season.

Maui surfers, Jackson Bunch and Eli Hanneman storm into Finals Day at the SAMBAZON World Junior Championships after posting strong heat totals, and earning Round of 16 victories.

Both Maui contenders debuted in strong form, with Jackson Bunch and Eli Hanneman each notching Opening Round heat wins, according to the WSL.

Maui surfers Eli Hanneman and Jackson Bunch are among the athletes competing in the Sambazon World Junior Championships hosted by Best Western, taking place at Seaside Reef, in San Diego, Calif.

Competitors will have to deal with in-form Hawaiʻi/Tahiti Nui competitors making their way fresh off a Sunset Pro presented by HIC event. The recent runner-up Nora Liotta (HAW), current Hawaii/Tahiti Nui No. 1 Moana Jones Wong (HAW), No. 2 Puamakamae DeSoto (HAW), Sunset Pro Finalists Eweleiula Wong (HAW) and Brianna Cope (HAW), and more are on the hunt for big results of their own.

When action resumes, the men’s Round of 32 will feature renowned phenom Jackson Dorian (HAW) taking on an in-form Luke Tema (HAW), Diego Ferri (HAW), and Rylan Beavers (HAW) in Heat 1. 

“Due to an abundance of caution for the increasing COVID-19 reports statewide,” organizers say they will be postponing this fundraising event “until all parties agree that it is safe and pono.”

The World Surf League released the official list of nominees for the 2021 Red Bull Big Wave Awards, with Maui native Kai Lenny nominated in all four categories: Ride of the Year, Biggest Paddle, Biggest Tow and Performer of the Year.

The opening day of the World Surf League Sunset Pro witnessed Maui native and big-wave specialist Ian Walsh easily advancing in his heat.
