Oct. 11, 2020 COVID-19 Update: 103 New Cases (79 on Oʻahu and 24 on Hawaiʻi Island)

There were 103 new COVID-19 cases in Hawai‘i today, including 79 on the island of O‘ahu and 24 on Hawai‘i Island. Kaua‘i and Maui reported no new cases today. Hawai‘i’s COVID-19 death toll increased to 169, with one new death reported since yesterday on O‘ahu. Details are pending release.   

Oct. 10, 2020 COVID-19 Update: 73 New Cases (59 on Oʻahu and 14 on Hawaiʻi Island); 2 Deaths

There were 73 new COVID-19 cases reported on Oct. 10, 2020 in Hawai‘i, including 59 on the island of O‘ahu and 14 on Hawai‘i Island. Kaua‘i and Maui reported no new cases today. There were two deaths reported, in Oʻahu.

Hawaiian Airlines to Suspend ‘Ohana by Hawaiian Service

Hawaiian Airlines today announced it will temporarily suspend ‘Ohana by Hawaiian passenger and cargo services effective Nov. 1. Hawaiian, which reduced its workforce by nearly 2,500 employees this month when the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Payroll Support Program expired, will suspend its ‘Ohana by Hawaiian passenger flights between Honolulu and Moloka‘i and Lāna‘i, as well as cargo-only service within the Hawaiian Islands. Service between HNL and Kapalua in West Maui was suspended in March.

Legislation Seeks to Improve Distance and Blended Learning for K-12 During COVID-19

US Senator Mazie Hirono, along with her colleague Senator Booker of N.J., announced their plan to introduce the Learning Opportunity and Achievement Act or LOAA, which seeks to improve distance and blended learning in public schools during the coronavirus pandemic.

There were 155 new COVID-19 cases in Hawai‘i today, including 109 on the island of O‘ahu, 45 on Hawai‘i Island and one case in a resident of Hawai‘i who was diagnosed out-of-state. Kaua‘i and Maui reported no new cases today.

Hawai‘i Has Authorized 1,527 New Housing Units in 2020

The report notes that while home sales and new construction fell sharply during the onset of the pandemic, both have rebounded aggressively, fueled by a combination of low interest rates, increased demand and a growing preference for low-density housing.

Food Distributions to be Held Every Friday in October for Moloka‘i Residents

Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino announced that food distribution events will be held every Friday in October for Molokaʻi residents in need. The second food distribution is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Oct. 9 at the Mitchell Pauʻole Community Center in Kaunakakai.

New Fees Go Into Effect at State Parks on Friday

As of Friday, Oct. 9, out-of-state residents and commercial operators will be charged higher fees for entering select Hawaiʻi State Parks.  The higher fees were approved by the Board of Land and Natural Resources in August.

10 Days to Go: Ironing Out County Options Ahead of Pre-Travel Testing Launch

The governor has already denied requests from Maui and Kauaʻi for post-testing proposals; however Maui Mayor Michael Victorino said, “even though he has denied the second test for incoming trans-Pacific travelers, he is still in favor of looking at some other alternatives.”
