The longtime musician, entertainer, and on-air radio personality, passed away on Friday night, September 30, 2011 at his home in Lahaina, surrounded by family.

Crews from the Maui Fire Department battled brush fire in the Kaluakoi area of Molokai on Friday evening. The blaze was first reported at 6:33 p.m. near Kaluakoi Road and Hauakea Avenue.

Darrell Belen, Andrew Cabral Jr., Kevin Dunn, Nephi Laga, Anthony Maldonado, and Aaron Mark were sworn in during a graduation ceremony at the Maui Beach Hotel in Kahului. The class started with 13 members, but only six remained after an eight month recruit training program.

Phycal plans to break ground on the pilot algae farm late this year or early next year on 34 acres near Poamoho Camp. Initial plans are to produce up to 150,000 gallons of algae-based biofuel by 2014.

The negotiated order was approved by the county in July. It requires the installation of a non-chlorine disinfection system at the facility by the end of December 2013.

According to police reports, the motorcyclist had a red light at the time of the crash. Following the impact with an industrial truck at the Cane Haul Rd. intersection, the motorcycle caught on fire.

A fire in the forestry area above Kapalua on Maui was 90% contained by nightfall on Monday, but fire officials say it is not considered under control. The assessment was made at 6:40 p.m. as ground crews continued to battle hot spots within the fire perimeter.

Maui firefighters continue to battle a blaze above Kapalua Airport that started overnight. The brush fire was first reported at around 1 a.m., with initial size estimates at around 5 to 10 acres.

The Maui County Charter Commission continues its review of proposals for charter amendments at a meeting today, Monday, September 26.

The 89th Annual Maui Fair will begin Thursday, September 29th at the War Memorial Complex Fairgrounds in Wailuku.
