Maui Bicycling League successfully hosts Memorial Ride of Silence

The Maui Bicycling League held its annual Ride of Silence on Saturday, joining over 400 locations worldwide in honoring cyclists who have been injured or lost their lives while riding. The event drew more than 30 bike riders and advocates who came together to ride in silence, dressed in white, to commemorate those who have tragically died while cycling.

Battling invasive species topic of County sustainability series, May 30

‘Appalling’ Maui case of a purloined pet pig, Eddie

*Reader caution: This story contains allegations of animal cruelty that some might find disturbing. Thieves stole “Eddie,” a well-fed and beloved domesticated pig, from a Haʻikū animal sanctuary on May 11, according to a post by Sarah Haynes, operator of the Kitty Charm Farm. She said the criminals faked an Instagram video of themselves “hunting” it, then killed and gutted it. Before long, they entered the 250-pound deceased animal into a Makawao feral pig hunting contest, winning first place and $1,000 cash prize, according to Haynes’ social media posts.

Update: Waiehu brushfire 100% contained

A brush fire in Waiehu burned 1.75 acres on Friday afternoon. The fire was reported at around 12:57 p.m. on May 24, 2024 in an area near the Kahekili Highway and Waiehu Beach Road intersection. Crews arrived on scene to find at least two separate areas where abandoned vehicle fires had spread to the surrounding brush.

Disaster recovery services extended through June

The Disaster Recovery Center and Community Resource Center will continue providing help in West Maui to wildfire survivors June 30, according to an announcement.

Haleakalā National Park seeks public input on potential campground fee increases

The proposed new rate for all campsites in the park is $20/night per site and is based on maintenance costs, as well as fees for comparable campgrounds on Maui. The increased fee revenue will be used to help maintain campgrounds and fund important projects throughout the park.

Sandwich Isles Communications is a private company that is required to provide reliable telecommunications service on Hawaiian Home Lands. The company is facing foreclosure by the federal government due to nonpayment of a major loan. An estimated 1,500 households and businesses on Hawaiian Home Lands are facing sudden loss of service as a result.

$1.55B for Hawaiʻi projects included in House Appropriations’ bill covering military construction, veterans affairs

US Congressman Ed Case reported that the Fiscal Year 2025 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations bill, approved today by the US House Committee on Appropriations, includes more than $1.55 billion in military construction projects for Hawai‘i, the most of any state.

Maui teachers call on Board of Education for more support nine months after Lahaina wildfire

More than a dozen Maui teachers flew to Oʻahu on Thursday to ask for more support following devastating wildfires last August. Designated as a hard-to-staff location for years, West Maui is experiencing a critical teacher shortage as many educators are still piecing together their lives, or were forced to leave the area entirely, according to the Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association. Educators on Maui are asking for increased shortage differentials for West Maui teachers, the creation of a fire relief leave bank, and more robust mental health support for all who were impacted, including displaced students.

Hawaiʻi Attorney General joins coalition to defend EPA’s greenhouse gas emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles

The EPA’s final rule will reduce 1 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions and result in $10 billion annual climate benefits, $300 million in annual non-greenhouse gas public health benefits, and $3.5 billion in annual operational savings for the trucking industry over the lifetime of these vehicles, according to rule backers. Currently, the EPA’s final rule is being challenged by 25 other states, which seek to stop emissions standards for heavy-duty vehicles from taking effect.
