Dec. 14, 2020 COVID-19 Update: 190 New Cases (158 O‘ahu, 15 Maui, 15 Hawai‘i Island, 2 Out-of-State)

There were 190 new COVID-19 cases reported in Hawai‘i on Monday, including 158 on O‘ahu, 15 on Maui, 15 on Hawaiʻi Island and two in Hawai‘i residents diagnosed outside of the state. The new infections include four cases each in Lahaina and Kahului, two cases each in Kīhei and Makawao and one case in Kula, according to the latest mapping updates provided by the state Department of Health. The two remaining Maui cases were unaccounted for in the latest update.

Rep. Lisa Marten, DrPH (D-51, Kailua, Waimānalo) revealed that she was one of the 44,000 trial participants nationwide for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination.

Lahaina has the most current infections with 42 cases reported over the past two weeks.   Kīhei also has a medium range of infections with 40 cases reported over the last 14 days.  Kahului has had 17 cases over the same period; and Wailuku was added to the medium infection range list today with 11 cases tallied over the last two weeks.

Unfortunately, most sea turtles struck by boats do not survive. This year only one turtle was sent to the Maui Ocean Center Marine Institute for Rehabilitation before being released back to the ocean to live another day.

New Ultra-Cold Freezer Installed at Kaiser as Maui Prepares for Arrival of COVID-19 Vaccine

In preparation for the first shipment, an ultra-cold freezer unit was purchased and installed to receive vaccine allotment for Maui.  The freezer can hold up to 200,000 doses of vaccine and will be available to help other health care organizations who need access to ultra-cold storage.  The unit can maintain a temperature of -80 and has a real-time monitoring system to ensure safety.

A Wailuku girl is one of 34 kids whose drawings are featured in “The Ickabog” by J.K. Rowling.  The fairy tale book is Rowling’s first children’s book in 13 years, since the last Harry Potter book was published in 2007.
