Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports a preliminary magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred on the South Flank of the Kīlauea Volcano at 6:51 a.m. on Aug. 9, 2018.

The Acting Mayor of Hawaiʻi County, Wil Okabe, issued an emergency proclamation on Tuesday night ahead of Hurricane Hector’s approach to the Hawaiian Islands.

The center of Hurricane Hector was located 210 miles SE of South Point, 240 miles SSE of Hilo, 330 miles SSE of Hāna and 350 miles SE of Kahului

“We learned that further action is needed to make our residents more resilient to hurricanes and other emergencies, especially when it comes to preparing emergency kits with a 14-day supply of food, water and prescription medication,” said Dr. Janet Berreman, Kaua‘i District Health Officer.

The far northern fringes of Hurricane Hector will brush the Big Island on Wednesday. Tropical storm force winds up to 73 mph are possible for Hawaiʻi Island.

Crews responded to a surfer in distress about 150-yards off Ukumehame Beach Park on Saturday morning.

The lava flow from Fissure 8 in the Lower East Rift Zone of the Kīlauea volcano is greatly diminished and deflation at the summit of Halema’uma’u has slowed.

Hector has entered the Central Pacific as a Category 4 Hurricane with increased forward movement near 15 mph and maximum sustained winds are near 140 mph.

Pūlehu Road in Kula is CLOSED between Holopuni and the “Y” Omaopio/Pūlehu intersection due to a brush fire. Fire crews are on scene.

The Honoapiʻilani Hwy is now OPEN in both directions as of 2:11 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018. It was closed earlier this afternoon following a motor vehicle accident in the Māʻalaea/Waikapū area. Expect delays as traffic resumes its normal flow.

Hurricane Hector will cross into the Central Pacific tonight or early Monday and will be crossing through the Hawaiʻi region around Wednesday.

The pedestrian has since been identified, following the notification of next of kin, as Yonina Helgenberger, 37, of Kahului.

At 11 a.m. HST, on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018, the center of Hurricane Hector was located 1185 miles ESE of Hilo and 1290 miles ESE of Kahului, Maui.

Although initial reports indicated that both individuals were in their 20’s, Maui police released information today saying the man was 40-years-old and the female was 37-year-old. Police say both appear to have been visitors from the Republic of Korea.

Officers from the Maui Police Department’s Traffic Division are joining the Maui Coalition for Drug-Free Youth in their “Smoke-Free Ride when Keiki Inside” campaign.

Rescue crews on board the fire department’s Air-1 helicopter located the teenager, along with two females and a male on the Hoapili Trail, also known as, “The Kings Highway,” roughly two miles east of the parking area at La Perouse Bay.

The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement began exploring legal options against Chicago-based business Aloha Poke Co. after the mainland chain attempted to enforce a trademark on the name.

Short-term fluctuations in intensity are likely during the next few days, but Hector is expected to remain at or near major hurricane intensity through early next week.

One of the victims, described as a male in his 20’s was pronounced dead at the scene by Medics. The other victim, described as a female in her 20’s was transported by Medics to Maui Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

The 59-year-old Moloka’i resident was reported to have sustained multiple injuries as a result of the fall, but was transported to Moloka’i General Hospital.
