Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation launches a Speeding Catches Up With You campaign today, in an effort to reduce speeding and vehicle deaths.  “Regardless of the identified cause of a traffic crash, the cause of a traffic fatality is always speed,” said Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen. “Excessive speed reduces reaction time and increases lethality of impacts. The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation will receive a $22 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to construct a new Transportation Security Administration checkpoint at Kahului Airport. Severe drought conditions are now impacting the southern and western coastal areas of Maui. According to the US Drought Monitor weekly reporting, this is the first time the severe drought designation has been noted in Hawaiʻi this summer.

The Hawai‘i Land Trust has been awarded an $803,700 grant from NOAA for the federal Climate-Ready Coasts initiative.  The funds will be used at the 277-acre Waiheʻe Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge on Maui.  It will also fund restoration of taro fields and the fishpond at Kapoho, which is located within the refuge.

A new youth shelter on Maui celebrates its grand opening on July 15. The Hale Pono facility in Wailuku is the first short-term facility of its kind on the island in more than 15 years, according to organization leaders.
