The meeting will include the status of debris clearing by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Building code compliance will be discussed. Hawaiʻi Community Foundation will provide an update on recovery efforts supported through the Maui Strong Fund, and representatives of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory will share information on its kickoff of the Lahaina Energy Project with partners Lahaina Strong, Shake Energy Collaborative, and Hā Sustainability.

Vendor applications available for 51st annual Maui County Senior Fair
The County of Maui Office on Aging, in partnership with Maui Economic Opportunity Inc., invites vendors to participate in the 51st Annual Senior Fair, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Maui Mall Village in Kahului. The deadline for vendor application submissions is Monday, Sept. 23, 2024.
Gov. Green selects Ciara Kahahane as head of Commission on Water Resource Management
Governor Josh Green, M.D., has appointed Ciara (pronounced Key-ruh) Kahahane, currently serving in the Complex Litigation Division of the Department of the Attorney General, to be the next first deputy of the state Commission on Water Resource Management (CWRM). Her appointment is subject to approval by CWRM.
Waterline work to close portions of Kaʻahumanu Ave., Aug. 28-30
The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation advises motorists that eastbound lanes of Kaʻahumanu Ave. (Route 32) between Kāne Street and Lono Ave. will be impacted by work for the Maui Palms Hampton Inn project from Wednesday, Aug. 28 to Friday, Aug. 30. More night and day closures for the work is expected in the next couple of weeks.

Brown Water Advisories issued for Central, South and West Maui locations
A Brown Water Advisory has been issued at multiple coastlines around Central, South and West Maui including: Waihe’e to Kahului Harbor; Uwapo Road to Cove Park; Māʻalaea to McGregor Point; Puamana to Pāpalaua; Kahana Village; Hanakaʻōʻō Beach Park; and DT Fleming Beach Park.
Red Cross staffing shelters for Big Island residents facing extended power outage
Two post-impact shelters are now open due to extended power outages across the Big Island in the wake of Hurricane Hone. Hawaiʻi County has opened these shelters under their guidelines and requested that the American Red Cross staff them with the purpose of serving those who have been without power since the storm’s passing over the weekend.

Milestone reached with debris removal underway on last single- and multi-unit residential properties in Lahaina
The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), in partnership with federal, state, and local partners, announced that debris removal on the last single- and multi-unit residential properties in Lahaina is underway. This milestone marks a significant achievement in the Personal Property Debris Removal Program, as all residential properties will be cleared months ahead of the original January 2025 deadline—a testament to the dedication and efficiency of the teams involved.
17th Annual Kū Mai Ka Hula competition at the MACC, Sept. 14
Kū Mai Ka Hula (“Hula Appears”) returns to the Castle Theater for its 17th annual event Sept. 14 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) as Maui’s premier annual competition – and Maui’s only adult hula competition. A related presentation and discussion, The Uluwehi Project, will take place Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater. Watershed Fundraising Farm Dinner at Mākena Golf & Beach Club, Sept. 7
Mākena Golf & Beach Club will host Ulu Mai he Wai, a fundraising dinner event honoring local organizations, Kula Community Watershed Alliance, Uhiwai O Haleakalā, and Mauna Kahālāwai Watershed Partnership, for their work towards supporting Mauiʻs watersheds. Power outage update: Hawaiian Electric working to restore power to 1,902 on Big Island, 64 in Upcountry Maui, and 62 on Oʻahu
Hawaiian Electric crews continue work to restore power to the remaining customers impacted by Tropical Storm Hone. As of 10:30 a.m., 1,902 remained without power on the Big Island, 92 were without power in Upcountry Maui, and 62 customers were without power on Oʻahu.

Hundreds of guns turned in for groceries in community buyback event
Some 514 firearms, numerous rounds of ammunition, and related items were turned in on Saturday at O‘ahu’s second gun buyback event. Individuals turning in firearms received a total of 531 gift cards valued at $5,310.
