More than 450 people attended a virtual community meeting on Tuesday to get updates on the status of West Maui’s commercial and recreational vessel activities.

In a gesture of community support, True Value has announced a significant donation to the Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina, Maui, that was affected by recent wildfires. The contribution consists of products valued at a total of $200,000, spanning essential categories aimed at helping the school rebuild and recuperate.

Homeowners and renters who were affected by the Aug. 8 wildfires on Maui now have until Thursday, Nov. 9, to apply for federal disaster assistance from FEMA and submit an application for a disaster loan from the US Small Business Administration. 

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center presents a return to Maui of the Hawai‘i International Film Festival (HIFF) with six feature films, a program of six short films, and a showcase of four documentaries. All screenings will take place in the MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater starting Friday, Oct. 27 and concluding Sunday, Oct. 29.

The Maui County Council will discuss a resolution on Friday, Oct. 6, urging the governor to reinstate Marvin Kaleo Manuel as the first deputy of the Commission on Water Resource Management.

The new interim rule follows the first detection of CRB on Maui three weeks ago, when a dead adult CRB was found in a bag of compost shipped from O‘ahu at a Maui retailer. No other CRB has been detected on Maui. However, the efforts to restore the land and soil on Maui and Hawai‘i Island due to the wildfire damage have increased shipments of compost and organic landscaping material from O‘ahu, increasing the risk of the transport of CRB to non-infested areas.

The brands LâMO Footwear and Oomphies contributed the shoes with a retail value of more than $215,000 to Maui wildfire survivors.

“My Partner” was shot in Lahaina and is believed to be the last production to showcase Lahaina before the destructive Aug. 8, 2023 fire.

The Maui Economic Development Board, in partnership with the Principal Foundation, said 95 small businesses directly impacted by the Aug. 8 Lahaina and Upcountry wildfires each will receive $1,000 grants from the Maui Business Recovery Fund.

The Hawaiʻi Building Industry Foundation has established the Maui Recovery + Rebuild Fund, which will provide targeted recovery and rebuild efforts for members, residents and the community impacted by the August 2023 Maui wildfires.

Informational sessions for Maui County’s Agricultural Micro Grant Program 4.0 will be held on Oct. 4 at Maui Economic Opportunity and Oct. 11 at the Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani, helping small farmers and ranchers understand the application process and document requirements.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration awarded $17.3 million in funding to the Hawai‘i State Department of Health for emergency behavioral health support in the aftermath of the Maui fires.

The application will help unlock the production of at least 10,800 new housing units within the next six years. Over time and with additional infrastructure, the proposal aims to unlock up to 30,000 new units.  The grant application is not part of the Emergency Proclamation relating to affordable housing. 

Five mariners were rescued by the Coast Guard and Moloka’i Fire Department early Tuesday morning after the vessel they were on ran aground off of ʻĪlio Point, Molokaʻi.

The Maui Police Department on Tuesday identified Laurie Allen, 65, of Lahaina as a victim of the Aug. 8 Lahaina fire. She had sustained burn wounds during evacuation from her home, according to earlier reports.

Disaster area restrictions will be lifted on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6 and 7, for owners and residents of Zones 2A, 2B and 2F. This includes parts of Malo St., Kalani Rd., Kekai Rd., ʻĀinakea Rd., and Malanai St.

A newly-launched Host Housing Support Program will provide monthly stipends of up to $1,500 to eligible households who are providing shelter to individuals and families displaced by the Maui wildfires.

A 31-year-old Wailuku man suffered fatal injuries in a motorcycle crash early Tuesday morning on Kehalani Mauka Parkway. The incident was reported at 1:19 a.m. on Oct. 3, about 500 feet north of Kauna Lipo Drive in Wailuku.
