Hawaiʻi House adjourns, prioritizes financial relief and support of local families
The Hawaiʻi House of Representatives officially adjourned sine die on Thursday, marking the end of the 32nd legislative session. Throughout the past four months, House leaders said the chamber made significant progress on the priority areas of affordable housing, financial relief for low-income families, mental health services, and protecting Hawaiʻi’s natural resources.

State announces distribution of payment from $141M settlement with Intuit
Consumers who were “deceived” by TurboTax’s owner Intuit Inc. into paying for free tax services will begin receiving checks from a multi-million multi-state settlement. Up to 15,904 Hawaiʻi consumers who were impacted, will receive checks in the mail. Most consumers are expected to receive between $29 and $30.

The county’s Office on Aging in Wailuku will be closed to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 5, for the 54th Maui County Outstanding Older American Recognition Awards event. It will reopen from 2 to 4:30 p.m. that day.
Coach Soichi Sakamoto Pool in Wailuku to close briefly May 5 for swim test
The Coach Soichi Sakamoto Pool in Wailuku will be closed from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, May 5, for a swim test that’s part of pool guard recruitment, the county Department of Parks and Recreation announced. The pool will reopen from 1 to 4 p.m. that day for lap and recreational training.
2023 Hawaiʻi and National Youth Poet Laureate selected during Maui event
The Maui Arts & Cultural Center announced the selection of Corina Yi as Hawaiʻi’s third Youth Poet Laureate. She is a high school senior at Oʻahu’s Mililani High School. As part of the event, the National Youth Poet Laureate was also named, Salome Agbaroji of Los Angeles representing the Western Region.
Maui student honored with first annual Honsador $5,000 scholarship
A Maui student has been selected as the winner of the first annual Honsador Lumber $5,000 scholarship. Kaitlin Kitagawa, a senior from King Kekaulike High School, was hand-selected for the award by committee members for her academic excellence, community involvement, and extracurricular activities.
Kamehameha Schools Maui students paint a mural with a message at Kahului Airport
Students say the mural was created with the hopes that visitors and residents alike properly treat the land and water with respect and understand its importance.
The ‘ōlelo no’eau (Hawaiian Proverb) that is on the mural reads, “I ola ‘oe, i ola mākou nei”, “My life is dependent on yours; your life is dependent on mine.”

Maui police provide update on fatal shooting on Molokaʻi
*WARNING/GRAPHIC CONTENT: Maui police released body camera images from a deadly shooting reported Sunday on Molokaʻi. Over the course of about three minutes, officers are heard instructing the suspect over 70 times to drop a machete, and 29 times to move back. The man, later identified as 40-year-old Nathaniel Naki, was holding a two foot machete during the confrontation.
