Pāʻia Youth & Cultural Center’s plan to demolish its aging shoreline facility and rebuild mauka as part of a climate-resilient “managed retreat” has entered a new phase with the release of a draft environmental assessment, posted in the state’s Dec. 8 Environmental Notice.​

The Maui County Department of Environmental Management is seeking public comment on a proposed $6 million project to upgrade Waikapū sewage and waterline systems.

The public has until Sept. 8 to comment on a draft environmental assessment for a Maui County Department of Water Supply project to sink and test four exploratory water wells in Launiupoko, West Maui.

E&K Aloha ʻĀina, LLC is proposing a landfill diversion project which would convert municipal solid waste and mixed plastic waste into renewable natural gas. Through this waste-to-fuel project, waste would be sorted, processed, and thermo-chemically transformed for beneficial use, instead of being landfilled. This waste-to-fuel project is projected to result in landfill diversion of roughly 90% of all incoming material.

The proposed project seeks to upgrade these properties to a gravity sewer system, eliminating environmental impacts from cesspools and leaking septic systems while providing a wastewater management system more resilient to disaster hazards from wildfires, flooding, and tsunami.

Public comments are due Jan. 22 for a proposed installation of a “geotextile, sand-filled burrito” as erosion control at the Kanai A Nalu, a nearly 50-year-old, four-story condominium in Māʻalaea.

A draft environmental assessment has been completed for an 1.6-mile, southerly extension of Waiʻale Road that would, literally, pave the way for the Waikapū Country Town development.
