County of Maui kona storm update: 1 p.m. March 20, 2026

MEMA, County Parks and Recreation and the American Red Cross will begin proactively opening shelters across Maui today. Shelters will provide cots, food, and water. Bring bedding, essential supplies and any necessary medications. Pets are allowed only if they are in crates. The length of shelter operations will depend on the severity of the weather. Additional shelter locations may open if needed.

MEMA evacuation advisory for certain Lahaina neighborhoods added to S. Maui, E. Maui and other advisory areas

Evacuation advisories have been issued at 9:28 a.m. today, March 20, 2026, for Wahikuli and Leialiʻi areas below Ka Laʻi Ola in Lahaina due to nearby retention basins nearing capacity, according to Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). County of Maui contracted crews are actively working to redirect overflow and actively pumping water from the Lahaina basin to help keep levels safe. Warnings and advisories are NOT mandatory evacuation orders.

Flooding risk evacuation notice downgraded for certain Lahaina neighborhoods

An evacuation warning notice has been downgraded to an advisory at 10:13 a.m. today, March 15, 2026, for Wahikuli and Leialiʻi areas below Ka Laʻi Ola in Lahaina due to the lower risk of flooding, according to Maui Emergency Management Agency.
