The largest number of sightings was at Pu’u Olai were 232 whales were counted, (33 of them claves); followed by Papawai Point (the scenic lookout on the Honoapiilani Highway) with 189 whales; and Ma’alaea with 167 whales. The 2012 tally, was 34% less than the 1,607 whales counted in 2011.

Maui’s Pacific Whale Foundation threw their 32nd Annual ‘Whale Day’ festival featuring special musical performances, vendors, keiki activities, local food, and information booths from Pacific Whale Foundation and other Maui organizations.

The move is expected to cut the organization’s energy use by more than 15,000 kwh per year, and prevent nearly 25,000 pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere annually.

Monitoring was conducted from a dozen counting stations, with the largest count recorded at Puu Olai.
