Hawai‘i’s next generation of hula dancers will take center stage at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center July 23-25, 2026, for the 51st Annual Queen Liliʻuokalani Keiki Hula Competition & Festival, one of Hawai‘i’s most cherished cultural traditions now under the stewardship of the Hawaiian Council.

The kāne of Hālau Hiʻiakaināmakalehua, under the direction of Kumu Robert Keano Kaʻupu IV won the overall title at the 63rd Annual Merrie Monarch Festival, in Hilo Hawaiʻi. In an interview at the end of the broadcast, Kaʻupu, who was at a loss of words, said he was in “shock,” but also “grateful and humbled.”

Kahiko night at the Merrie Monarch Festival featured hula in the ancient style with 29 groups performing Friday night in the annual competition in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. The festival continues tonight with ʻauana or modern hula, followed by results from the 63rd event.

Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi, of Wailuku, Maui, won the Overall Kaikamahine (girls) division in the first Queen Liliʻuokalani Keiki Hula competition held since the onset of COVID.

From Maui, the seven men of Hālau Kekuaokalā‘au‘ala‘iliahi, under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula Haunani & ʻIliahi Paredes of Wailuku, took first place honors in the kāne kahiko and earned 4th place in the kāne ʻauana division. Their combined effort earned them the Overall Kāne title for the second year in a row. From Maui, the seven men of Hālau Kekuaokalā‘au‘ala‘iliahi, under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula Haunani & ʻIliahi Paredes of Wailuku, took first place honors in the kāne kahiko and earned 4th place in the kāne ʻauana division. The Prince Kūhiō Maui Ho’olaule’a returns to Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center Friday, March 24, 2023, from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and features free keiki activities, hands-on exhibits, Hawaiian music and hula.

The Festivals of Aloha heads to Wailea with events scheduled from Oct. 28-30, 2022 at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea.

Hulō! to the Hālau from Kauaʻi! Hālau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leinā‘ala took the overall title at the 59th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival. From Maui, the seven men of Hālau Kekuaokalā‘au‘ala‘iliahi, under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula Haunani & ʻIliahi Paredes of Wailuku, swept first place honors in both the kāne kahiko and kāne ʻauana divisions. The women of Kekuaokalā‘au‘ala‘iliahi earned second place honors in the wahine kahiko division.

Two Maui hālau hula are competing in this year’s Merrie Monarch Festival as the event takes place with modifications in Hilo at the Edith Kanakaʻole Stadium. Competition is set for April 21-23, 2022.

Ho‘omau 2022, a benefit concert to support Hawaiian language immersion preschool students at Pūnana Leo o Maui in Wailuku, will be held at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens in Kahului from 9 a.m. to sunset on Saturday, March 26.

Maui’s Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi under the direction or Nā Kumu Haunani & ʻIliahi Paredes earned a second place overall finish. The hālau from Wailuku, Maui also captured awards for: first place in the Wahine Overall, second place in Kāne Overall, first place in Wahine ‘Auana, third place in Wahine Kahiko, and second place in the Kāne ʻAuana divisions.

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center hosts a special Live @ the MACC performance and talk story, “Behind the Curtain: Mālama I Ke Ahi” with Hālau KekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻIliahi, an award-winning Maui hālau.

The Maui Arts and Cultural Center hosts “Live @ the MACC,” a live streaming event this Saturday, Dec. 19, starting at 7:30 p.m., featuring Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi.

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center will livestream events every Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. through Jan. 30, 2021 for its Live @ the MACC series. The series consists of rock, pop, holiday and Hawaiian music concerts, hula and contemporary dance performances and the visual arts.

This yearʻs theme is “I Mau ʻo Hawaiʻi He ʻĀina Aloha,” which is roughly translated as “In order to preserve Hawaiʻi as a beloved homeland.”
