Maui’s overtourism hotspots Road to Hāna, Honolua Bay targeted for relief under new management plan

The hotspot priorities were selected because action is urgently needed and “actually possible” over the three-year lifespan of the 2026-2028 Maui Destination Management Action Plan.

Emergency slope repairs will close remote Alelele Point roadway 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays starting May 1

A portion of remote county roadway at Alelele Point near Mile Marker 39 will be closed to all traffic, with the exception of emergency vehicles, between 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday starting May 1, 2024, due to an emergency slope repair project on the makai side of the road, according to a County of Maui Department of Public Works announcement today. The road closure is expected to last five months, the department said. Alelele Point is located on the southeast side of Maui and connects Kaupō and Kīpahulu.

Hāna groups issue advisory against visiting Waiʻoka and Kaihalulu in East Maui

The group Hoʻomakaukau Maui Hikina – “East Maui Ready” Leadership (EMR) is issuing a standing advisory requesting that both Waiʻoka and Kaihalulu areas of East Maui be avoided when looking for recreational spots to visit.

The County of Maui’s roadway along rural Alelele Point in East Maui was reopened Tuesday, after the completion of infrastructure reinstallation that followed emergency slope scaling and rock debris removal.

Road restoration, catchment fencing and reinstalling Hawaiian Telcom infrastructure will continue on the $1.5 million emergency slope stabilization project. Anticipated completion is July 19, 2023.

Barriers, electric signs warn motorists of East Maui road closure following rockfall

County of Maui crews set up concrete barriers today to prevent traffic along a nearly 1-mile Hāna Highway road closure in Kīpahulu where unstable cliffs pose a safety hazard. The closure prevents motorists from traveling completely around the rural area that connects East Maui and South Maui.

Flooding forces closure of Piʻilani Highway at Mile 29-31

Piʻilani Highway is closed between MP 29 and 31 near Pahihi Gulch due to flood waters that have made the area unpassable.

As of noon on Tuesday, Oct. 4, Piʻilani Highway at Nuʻu Bay has reopened, the Department of Public Works reported.

Piʻilani Highway open and passable for four-wheel-drive vehicles

Although the road is open and passable, motorists should still exercise extra caution in the Kaupō and Kīpahulu areas. The 5-mile section of unpaved road is rough and very dusty, so four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended. Visitors to Hāna are advised to return to Central Maui via Pāʻia instead of Kīpahulu.
