The Maui County Democratic Party’s selection body has narrowed the list of names for consideration to the Senate District 7 vacancy to: Lynn DeCoite, Yuki Lei Sugimura and Leo Caires.

The Democratic Party of Hawaiʻi has received six applications from interested members to fill the vacant Senate District 7 seat, which was previously held by Senator J. Kalani English until his retirement on May 1, 2021. The Senate District 7 seat represents Hāna, East and Upcountry Maui, Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i, and Kaho‘olawe.

Councilmember Riki Hokama introduced legislation to establish a moratorium on transient accommodation permits on the island of Lānaʻi, where no limits are currently established.

Lifeguards responded to 32 rescues in a single day at Kanahā Beach Park. North shore ocean safety captain Keola Brown said lifeguards just want to fair compensation so that they can support their families.

The contract includes a 17% increase in wages because of the employees’ reallocation to a new bargaining unit. In Maui County, approximately 50 ocean safety officers will be affected.

Hokama says his proposal would decrease real property tax rates for most classifications to lessen the impact of higher valuations.

The County of Maui Department of Housing and Human Concerns announced that a briefing on Lānaʻi affordable housing will be held Friday, April 8 at 5 p.m. at the Lānaʻi Senior Center.

The committee will host evening meetings throughout Maui County in April to receive community input.

Opponents say the bill would eliminate the county’s current “agriculture-use value” assessment, changing all agricultural lands to a “market value” assessment. They claim it would result in increased taxes for farmers and ranchers, and “severely handicap” the farming community in Maui County.
