Hawaiʻi’s own, Kamalei Kawaʻa, made his mark on national television as a Top 20 finalist on NBC’s “The Voice” (Season 25) and is now stepping into a new chapter of his musical journey. The Maui-born artist debuts his island reggae band, ʻĀinaty, and the release of their debut single, ʻĀinaty. 

The newsite posted nearly 1,500 stories this year, many of which involved people with connection to the university system making headlines, including Miss Aloha Hula winners, a contestant on “The Voice” and someone who once had a date with Marcia Brady.

If Kamalei Kawa’a’s performance struck viewers as emotional, it’s because it truly was. Kawa’a told Maui Now that his Monday night performance was one of the hardest performances, if not the hardest performance he’s ever had to do.

Maui musician Kamalei Kawaʻa secured a spot on Team Chance during the Blind Auditions of NBC’s “The Voice” by singing “Redemption Song” by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Just seconds into his audition, Chance the Rapper turned his chair in the hopes of securing Kawaʻa for his team.

Grand Wailea hosts an intimate sunset performance and evening of music for all ages on Friday, Dec. 22 from 6 to 10 p.m. The festivities will begin with music by Hawaiian reggae band Inna Vision, followed by a special performance from NBC-TV’s “The Voice” Season 24 contestant Jason Arcilla of Maui, as well as fellow contestant Kaylee Shimizu of Oʻahu.

Last night on The Voice’s Battle Rounds, Jason Arcilla of Maui went head-to-head with teammate Eli Ward. Singing a duet of “Make It With You,” by Bread, Jason was able to beat Eli and Gwen named him the winner of the battle.

In an Instagram update, Joseph Soul said it was “such an honor” to represent team Kelly Clarkson “but to be stolen by @gwenstefani was one of the most magical moments of my life.” 

Joseph Soul was born Joe-Sol Keoni Haʻaheo Okalani Malaikini. Originally from the remote town of Hāna, Maui, Soul was inspired by his grandfather who was a musician.

The four college teams will compete in the two-day Maui Jim Maui Classic basketball tournament today and Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016 at the War Memorial Gym in Wailuku.
