The West Maui Greenway, which also could be used for evacuations during emergencies, received a $15.4 million federal grant in January that the county has nine years to use.

A vision decades in the making is now becoming a reality with the announcement of a $15.43 million RAISE Grant to fund the West Maui Greenway.

The County of Maui was recently awarded a $15.43 million grant from the federal government to support the first phase of the West Maui Greenway, a project that will contribute to several key areas of Lahaina’s recovery from the 2023 Maui wildfires.

On Aug. 8, 2024, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) inducted Ke Ala Hele Makālae into its Hall of Fame, naming it one of the nation’s best. Despite its long history and benefits, an akin Maui project, the West Maui Greenway (WMG), remains stalled due to funding and implementation delays.

As Women’s History Month unfolds, the Maui Bicycling League extended appreciation to members of the Maui County Council for their service and dedication to the community. This recognition comes as part of a broader celebration of the contributions of women leaders in shaping Maui’s history and future.

The meeting will include updates on the West Maui Greenway, improvements to Honokōwai Playground and Lahaina Recreation Center and land maintenance of county land along Honoapiʻilani Highway.

The Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization will host its third virtual community meeting about the proposed 25-mile West Maui Greenway on Wednesday, June 29 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The West Maui Corridor Plan focuses on a 3.6-mile stretch of Honoapiʻilani Highway that connects Lahaina to Kāʻanapali, starting at the Lahaina Recreation Center Complex and ending at the Kāʻanapali Resort area at Whaler’s Village.

The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset invites the public to learn more about the West Maui Greenway on Tuesday, April 5, at a talk by Maui Bicycling League Co-founder Lee Chamberlain.

The goal of the workshop and presentation is to develop the design and amenities for a five-mile greenway from Olowalu to Puamana, with hopes of continuing the vision for a continuous 25-mile greeway along Maui’s West coast.

Maui County Councilmembers Don Couch and Elle Cochran, and staff from Councilmember Don Couch’s office joined hotel industry and community business leaders for a bicycle ride hosted by the Maui Bicycling League and Pedego Electric Bikes Maui on a portion of the future West Maui Greenway.
