#Wildland Fire

(Update: 7:15 a.m., Friday, Sept. 18, 2026): The fire that began Thursday afternoon along Kūihelani Highway was 100% contained at 7:30 p.m. last night, after firefighters received assistance from a bulldozer to cut a fire line around the burned area.

The four-day training, attended by both Maui firefighters and community volunteers, covered wildfire and home ignition fundamentals, homeowner engagement and communication, HWMO’s home assessment process and software, and included classroom sessions as well as extensive hands-on field practice.

An estimated half acre of brush burned in an area between East Līpoa Street and Hale Kūʻai Street in Kīhei on Friday afternoon, Sept. 4, 2026. The fire was reported at around 1:31 p.m., in an area behind multiple businesses.

Maui fire crews responded to a half acre brush fire in the Waikō area of Central Maui, Tuesday night.  The fire was reported at 7:07 p.m., west of the Kuihelani Highway and north of East Waikō Road.

The Maui Fire Department will conduct wildland live fire training on Nov. 10, 12, 18 and 19, as part of our 42nd Recruit Class. This training will be conducted in Waikapū, across from the Maui Tropical Plantation.

Last week, experts from the US Forest Service wrapped up ignition training by conducting a field exercise on former agriculture lands in south Kaua‘i. Hundreds of acres here are covered in invasive grasses, the most common fuel for wildfire in Hawai‘i. Some 25% of the land across the state is covered by these grasses, adding to the overall potential for devastating wildfires.

The Maui Fire Department will restart wildland live fire training this morning, Monday, July 11, 2022.

It’s not their everyday job, but when called to a wildland fire, crews with the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife stand ready to protect three million acres of forest.

The Maui Fire Department conducts a live fire wildland training exercise today from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. just south of Haleakalā Highway and west of Keahua Road.  

The Maui Fire Department will conduct a single day live fire wildland training exercise on Tuesday, July 7, 2020. The training will take place on a parcel of Mahi Pono land just south of Haleakalā Highway and west of Keahua Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. This is an extension of the training conducted last month.

The Launiupoko training area is on 20 acres N of Punakea Loop. Training is also planned on 20 acres about 3 miles east of the Puʻunēnē sugar mill in Kahului.

The Maui Fire Department conducts wildland firefighting refresher training in the Launiupoko and Central Maui areas on April 17-19 and 22-24.

The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife is encouraging non-federal landowners, agencies, and organizations to apply for two US Department of Agriculture grant programs
