Statewide restoration event makes waves for World Ocean Day

Community groups, state agencies and nonprofits across Hawaiʻi teamed up to participate in a statewide restoration event for World Ocean Day. This multi-island effort, organized as part of the Year of Our Coastal Kuleana, focused on protecting the precious shorelines, reefs and wetlands that are vital to Hawaiʻi’s identify and prosperity.

Maui Ocean Center will celebrate World Ocean Day with educational and cultural activities, live music and marine naturalist presentations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, June 8.

Statewide ‘Makahiki Kuleana Kahakai’ coastal restoration day, June 6

The Department of Land and Natural Resources – Division of Aquatic Resources invites people on all islands to join in the Makahiki Kuleana Kahakai on June 6, 2026. As part of the Year of Our Coastal Kuleana, this event serves as a day of collective action to mālama the shorelines, waterways and community spaces that sustain life in Hawaiʻi. Two events are already planned on Maui including a dune restoration project at Kapukaulua (Baldwin Beach Park) on June 5, 2026; and a World Ocean Day event at Stable Road in Spreckelsville on June 6, 2026.

World Ocean Day is held each year on June 8 to “help unite and rally the world to protect and restore our blue planet.” Maui Ocean Center will celebrate World Ocean Day with family-friendly activities including live music, art projects and marine naturalist presentations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 8. Discounted admission for kama‘āina, with valid Hawaiʻi state ID, is $10 per person (ages 3 and younger are free).
