Witnesses told response crews that the individual was sitting on a mattress that was in the back of the pickup when a gust of wind caught the mattress and blew both it and the patient out of the rear of the truck.

Authorities have since identified the man as John Boyd Krause, 19, of Hāna, Maui. The accident was reported at 5:38 a.m. on Sunday, June 3, along the highway just south of Kakio Road in the Hāna district near Hāmoa.

Maui police say a man who died at the scene of an early morning crash in Makena did not die as a result of the crash. Authorities have since identified the man as 61-year-old Bernardo Ragamat.

Maui police have identified the male pedestrian killed in an afternoon traffic accident on the Mokulele Highway on Christmas Eve as 17-year-old Zachariah Aubut.

As of 4:23 p.m., the Mokulele Highway was completely open in both directions. A portion of Baldwin Avenue is closed this afternoon following a traffic accident that downed cable lines in the area. At 2:20 p.m., on Wednesday, October 5, Maui Police closed Baldwin Avenue between Kaluanui Road and Makawao Avenue.
