A 39-year-old woman from Kīhei is in critical condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center after an early morning car crash on Tuesday along North Kīhei Road.

Kaiser Permanente Hawaiʻi announced the hire of four new doctors to its staff of more than 700 health care providers in the state, including one member who joins the team at Maui Memorial Medical Center in Wailuku.

Nearly 500 frontline healthcare workers at Kaiser’s Maui Health System have voted to ratify a new three-year contract, ending a nearly two-month strike.

The bill includes the addition of 3 permanent positions and $98,500 in FY24 and $200,250 in FY25 for Maui College’s health center. House Bill 300, House Draft 1, Senate Draft 1 now moves back to the House for further consideration.  

With an overwhelming number of members voting NO to the latest three-year offer, the strike continues with no clear timeline on where contract discussions go from here.

The Maui Health and United Public Workers bargaining teams reached an agreement following lengthy talks on Tuesday, March 14. Striking Maui Health employees will now review the agreement and vote on whether or not to ratify it. Voting takes place over three days, March 16, 17 and 18.

Talks between United Public Worker employees and Maui Health resumed on Monday, March 6, but broke down after just two hours.

United Public Workers union members continue their strike, with plans to return to the bargaining table on Monday, March 6, with subsequent dates scheduled if necessary. While the notice to extend picketing to other entrances was submitted, representatives with the United Public Workers union say there are no immediate plans to do so.  

Negotiations are set to resume next week for hundreds of Maui Health System workers who have been on strike since last Wednesday. Negotiations with a Federal Mediator are set to resume on Monday, March 6, 2023 at 10 a.m. 

Even though she’s not represented by the union on strike, Angela Weldon, a charge nurse on the hospital’s fifth floor, joined the demonstration on her day off to show support. Weldon said the strike is being felt across the hospital. “Hells yeah it’s going to have an impact,” she said. “I have to go to work tomorrow night and I’m scared.”

Maui Health has announced the selection of Kerry Watson as its interim CEO as a national search is underway to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Michael Rembis this spring.

Maui Memorial Medical Center is experiencing a seasonally high patient census. The medical facility reports that the high census is expected for the winter months.

The planned Clinical Decision Unit will add 12 observation beds, including a specific area for patients with chest pains, allowing physicians and staff to monitor patients who do not meet the criteria for inpatient admission but are not well enough to go home.

Maui Health has ended its COVID-19 community vaccination clinic in the hospital lobby due to decreased demand. The facility administered nearly 87,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine over two years.

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health reported 1,169 new COVID-19 cases for the week of Nov. 17-23, 2022. This is well below the most recent peak of 8,924 new infections reported during the week of May 19-25, 2022. There were 10 COVID-19 deaths this week. 

Maui Memorial Medical Center has received an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for fall 2022, following the same grade awarded in May for spring 2022.
